Not read all the replies but I know someone who went through the same thing. As their OH worked away she bought a dog to feel safer...the dog barked randomly and all night. After getting the house blessed they discovered they had a bat in the basement. It will be something logical, don't worry!0

Do what ever will make you feel more settled in your new home.
I'm opened minded about spirits and such like, in that I don't believe you just disappear when you die.
That said I'm also pretty superstitious too - which is odd seeing as I bought a house number 13!!Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .0 -
We live in a very old house...we've even been told by relatives of past owners that it's believed to be haunted, right down to where "the ghost" is likely to be! Certainly our cat took to yowling a lot at one particular place for a while. Once I'd let the prospect of the house being haunted into my head, I'll admit I found it a little difficult to sleep for a while, for fear of what I might see when I woke up! Needless to say...I've never seen anything.
Most houses - not even just really old houses - are going to have had someone pass away in them. It's unavoidable, and sometimes it won't always be someone passing away quietly in bed...it doesn't have to be murder for someone to die in an unfortunate way. It's just what happens.
If you genuinely feel it's haunted, remember that a spirit can't hurt you, and isn't going to have any interest in actually harming you...they've just not moved on. As someone else said - try talking to it, saying you're not any kind of threat...it'll make you feel better and more at home, and you may well find that removes any sense of fear or trepidation you have.0 -
it worries me slightly that in 2012, many peoples first reaction to a creaky house is going 'its a ghost'
and the best solution is to get the house blessed?
really?0 -
My friend lived in a haunted farm house. I didn't believe in ghosts until I saw one, so now I have to believe. Her (now ex) partner quite liked them as the house had been in his family over 200 years. There was a drunk ghost who used to fall down the stairs!! You would literally hear someone tumble down the stairs but never saw anything, but he was fine with this cause it was only great uncle so and so
Then in the lounge you sometimes saw the weird black shadow out the corner of your eye.
The worse one I witnessed was sat on the loo and the bathroom was massive as obviously was once a bedroom so my friend had a dressing area in there and all her lotions and potions started rattling away on the dressing table!!! From then on I would never go to the loo on my own! Lol! I was actually quite relieved when they split up x0 -
I live in an oldish house. Late at night, a door would slam violently, reverberating through the house. This would happen several times a night.
It turns out to be an air lock. Every time a tap is turned on and off briskly, it causes this bang. The washing machine turns water on and off several times each cycle, and as I'd timed it to start late at night...0 -
There can be no harm in a blessing - and it doesn't make you any sort of stranger - the church offers them for a reason. (they make money on them
but they won't scoff, they are in the market of dealing with the 'after).
If that doesn't do the trick you can get a spriritualist in to communicate and see what the problem is.
Sage burned will cleanse the space its burnt in.
regardless of your previous beliefs you have to deal with the NOW, and the money you have spent and where you will be living.
Whilst investigating more 'rational' explanations what can harm from doing the above?
Consider it part of the renovation work.
FWIW I have lived with spirits and come across them more than once (or energies or mould or whatever you want to label it). Some have been lovely and some not so lovely.
Do whatever you need to do to get peace of mind - and don't worry about anyone else's opinion. If nothing else you can smile about yourself and say you will have a go at anything for a decent nights sleep.0 -
Thanks for the further replies. We didn't have a good night unfortunately. We have two dogs and I brought them upstairs just as I thought I would feel better with them there. They just wouldn't go near the bedroom where the door slammed. In fact I took them downstairs again and brought them up one at a time and both of them slinked along the wall opposite the bedroom door and hurried into our bedroom. Still, that could just be some physical thing, cold maybe ?
We went to the local church today and the vicar is going to call to 'have a chat' tomorrow. It will be during the day so I hope it might resolve something. I am quite open to having the house blessed, it sounds like a nice thing to do. What I dont like is having some kind of Derek Acorah type coming round because although some may be genuine, I think a lot of so called mediums prey on vulnerable people who may be going through a bereavement.
While my OH was speaking to the vicar I introduced myself to a couple of ladies and honetly this did not make me feel better. I told them we had recently moved and that we had not had a chance to meet the previous owners of the house. One of them told me they had not been there long and had moved out without really telling many people but had apparently gone to Australia. When I mentioned we had a photo of a Victorian family and that I thought it was interesting, they more or less said it would be better to leave the past alone......I think I need to find out a bit more about the history of the house now.
I am not feeling as scared now after reading other people's experiences, at least I am not losing my marbles. Will update if I have any more info from the vicar tomorrow.
Just to reply - we had everything rewired. New boiler and some new pipework, all checked. No mould or damp apart from outbuildings. No immediate neighbours. Can't find anything obvious to suggest animals but still working on that. No teenagers, they are at uni but coming home tomorrow for Christmas !!!!!0 -
I still think that all natural causes should be eliminated before the supernatural is investigaged.
Also, if somebody wants their house blessed, I think they should have some sort of genuine religious belief. It would seem a bit hypocritical to me, to get the church in, when you are a non-believer.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Good luck to you omnasia. I think you are doing a very sensible thing. Our dog didn't want to go in one certain room in our flat either. I have no idea why but it worried me.
The vicar was nice, kind, sensible, he moved room to room in the flat, saying his blessings and throwing holy water about. I found his presence calming.
We all slept better that night and every night after that, even the dog. Please come back and let us know how you get on.0
