As knowledge has increased, we've become able to explain more and more and I'm sure we'll find the mechanisms that allow these currently inexplicable things to happen. To be truly scientific, we have to be open to whatever those explanations are.

Either we'll find the mechanisms, or we'll have to assume most of these "inexplicable" things didn't really happen. The problem is that the evidence of these things happening is largely anecdotal, and not able to be reproduced under the conditions of a scientific experiment. There is usually the possibility of an alternative explanation involving human psychology, trickery, and coincidence. And for a scientist, the simplest explanation that fits the evidence is the best one.

But those are explanations which are worth exploring.

What isn't scientific is to say something like - I can't explain it or reproduce it under regulated conditions, therefore it must have been your imagination.

...I will update if there are any more developments but just for now I think I am trying to convince myself it has ended. The Australians have it all worked out that this woman was murdered by a man, possibly husband, and had locked herself in the room to escape him, that is why the latch keeps going up and down and the door opens and slams. I just don't know any more......

Dare you, put this into novel form - obviously, edit the various posts a bit - and publish it as an e-read ;)

Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It has given me the strength to get through the past few weeks. I don't know about making it into a novel, I'd struggle with how to word it ! One thing's for sure, it has made me more open minded. I never thought anything like this would happen to us. I am in awe of the many things in the universe that we simply cannot comprehend and I will never dismiss anyone's experience in future.

I really believe that a lot of things can be explained but there remain a certain amount which just remain inexplicable to us at this time. Maybe in the future things will become clearer but for now I remain amazed and inquisitive -although I do not want any more manifestations-. We had a quiet night last night thankfully so now all that remains is for my husband to find out whatever he can on the history of the house etc.

Thanks to all who have contributed, I have read each and every one with interest and followed the links. I'm just blown away by the whole thing. O x
  • Please let us know when you do found out anything about the history of your house.:)

I got the impression that if it was a female spirit trying the lock of the door maybe she finds the door open more pleasant than shut - if that makes sense.

Hi Omnasia. Have read this thread with interest and an open mind. Just come out of the lurkers corner to suggest a way you could find out more about your house. The local family history society for your area may have something, as may your local records office. I'm sure that if you google search both you will get their contact details. Certainly the land registry department will have details on who owned the house before you, but i'm not sure how far back they would record that.
Good luck and I'm hoping you continue to live peacefully now in your home x
  • Hope your mind's at rest now, though I'd have been more inclined to call a plumber than a priest. Now you can enjoy your home!

Lammy82 - first posts I've seen of yours. You rock :)

  • I too have been following your thread with interest, although I have to admit, I only read it when my partner is home !

Having lived in what I classed as a 'haunted' home many years ago, and also it being in a 'rough area' of the town, it wasn't actually the spirits that forced me out, but the masked youth that stood in the garden at 2.00am one morning !! Just wanted to say how much I feel for you, and hope that the spirits finally lay to rest or move on.

As for writing a book, what a wonderful idea !

Well this has certainly been an interesting read! I grew up in a 500 year old 'haunted' house that did give me a funny feeling in certain rooms, and friends refused to stay the night (or stayed one night and did not want to spend another night there) but it was a house I loved living in, I don't think whatever was in the house (if indeed there was anything!) was there to hurt me, I did once think I saw a girl crying in my bedroom which made me hide under my bed for several hours though! :D

I would prefer ghostly visitors to human visitors, the masked youth the above poster mentioned would give me the creeps big time, and I once saw one of those 'Homes from Hell' type programmes about a man who was always finding things moved about and hearing strange sounds and it turned out to be the previous owner who was living in the loft space!
