Tesco Clubcard fraud - online vouchers stolen

Yesterday I logged into my grocery account to do an online shop and was told my email account didn't exist...I contacted Tesco who said they my email account wasn't showing on any of their records, just a very old email address from 13 years ago. They reset my account to my normal email address and I thought all would be fine.

Went to my favourites and there was nothing there, no previous shops or orders...I contacted Tesco again who weren't very helpful and said everything would go back to normal in 5 hours...which it didn't). I did tell them at this point I thought some-one had accessed my account.

This morning I realised my clubcard wasn't the same number so I tried to get into my clubcard account. Again, it said this card wasn't linked to my account. I contacted Tesco a 3rd time and finally found a wonderful lady who was very concerned.
She delved into the account and found out that £150 of my vouchers (we save them for going away) had been spent in Burnley or Blackburn!

Tesco have credited these back to my account today. The lady told me this was her 3rd call this morning. Remember once they are into your account, your debit card details are stored there (though no longer!), your email address, date of birth and address. Most people use the same password for all their accounts fortunately I don't.

If you use Tesco online please check your account and change your password.
  • I have just discovered my clubcard account was hacked into and my vouchers were used to claim rewards. I contacted Tesco immediately who basically said change your password, will refund the vouchers and sorry! No reason, no understanding, no confirmation that my personal details were safe, nothing!

The vouchers taken is the least of my concerns, my personal details, name address dob phone number and card details were saved online yet all they can say is sorry!

I have pressed them as to why their security is so easy to breach and await a response. The worst thing is on pressing them further they say they have the email address that these vouchers were sent. They are aware there is a problem and in the past have reported to the police, but don't know of the outcome!

Do yourselves a favour, like i did,

    1. contact Action Fraud Police on 0300 123 2040

    2. Ring your bank if you had saved details, report the problem and request a new card

    3. Go to cifas online and register yourself for a nominal annual fee of £20

    4. Join either Call Credit, Experian or Equifax and check your credit rating

Tesco should be doing more and in the very least emailing ALL their customers to alert them to the problem and to check their accounts.

  • Thank goodness my club card balance is SFA. Has been for years now.

Just checked mine. Same story. Vouchers all gone and used miles away.

Sure Tesco should be doing something about this or at least warning it's customers to change their passwords. Isn't this wilful negligence on their part considering their is so much sensitive data on our accounts?
Surely there is a lawyer out there who can shed some light on this??

Bumbles you really must report it as I have said above, if people accept this it will continue to happen. Tesco need to understand if they value their customers they will do whatever they can to improve their site protection and security, it really isn't about the vouchers it is the issue of internet fraud and identity theft, however, and there is also the distinct possibility it is employees. They stressed to me noone had accessed my account, but obviously they had! email ceo.customerservice@uk.tesco.com they must take this seriously.

Having received my latest set of vouchers in the post, I was horrified to find that they had already been spent, along with another £200 worth in either Preston, Blackburn or Accrington on 1 & 2 August - when I was almost 200 miles away!

Spoke to CS and the points are being re-added to my account and was told to check back online in a couple of days to confirm they have been re-done. I've also changed my password, despite my previous one being "strong".

As for printing a temp clubcard for use with those vouchers - surely if the fraudsters had done that, then the points associated with all these purchases would have been added to my account - they haven't!

Do you get more points on purchases paid for entirely by points with Tesco Clubcard? I know you don't with Nectar, you only get them when you spend actual money.

  • Tesco seems happy to refund vouchers...are we meant to be grateful? I would rather know how it is happened and what they are doing to stop it.

i dont know how.. but 53 points were added to my account on one the fraudulent transactions using my vouchers in May
21/05/2013 TESCO HAGLEY RD BHAM EXP £53.16 ..........53

hopefully you will get your points added on in a few days i seem to be getting the runaround again ... only £31 so far has been added to my account

this has been happening since late last year Tesco seem to be taking it in their stride ...with more and more cases comming to light esp when the new vouchers are being sent out

...in February they claimed only 100 clubcard usuers were affect .. must be more than double by now

But i have noticed they have changed the website to make it easier to change your Password in your account and saying it should be a mixture of letters and numbers
