I will never become a good neighbour again following this!!

returned from shopping this afternoon, and as I made my way into my home, a delivery driver approached me, said he had a package for someone on the street but wanted to leave it. He told me he had been approaching several on my neighbours. Although i did not know the person, i agreed to accept the package for the neighbour, assuming she was at work - big mistake!!
The delivery men returned moment later with a large bed stand, and told me they had posted a card through the customers letter box. The driver told me to sign a delivery note, which i did, and then they went.
Thgis is now when the fun begins. I waited until 8pm this evening, for a knock at the door, but noithing, so i read the address on one of the large packages, and approached the door, A guy behind the door spoke to me, and said the woman i was asking for no longer lived at the address. I asked him if he had received a card for a delivery, he said no. Confused I returned home to check i had the right door, which i did.
I notice a delivery advice attached to the outta box, and opened to see it was from littlewoods, explaining postage details but no customer service number.
I used https://www.saynoto0870.com and found a freephone number, customer service told me the nearest delivery day they can offer was the 4th may 2007. As you can imagine, i went nuts.
A friend told me to leave it on the street, and tell customer services, but as i signed for the goods, i assume I am liable. The lady i spoke to said she will call at 7pm on wednesday, and thoughts on what to do?
Did I do the right thing? Customer service told me the goods were cancelled. I asked them to contact the customer by phone, but thats against there policy.
Was thinking of asking for some vouchers for all the trouble caused, what do you think?

Don't lose faith in your neighbors. Most will do you a good turn. As you should (and have, in your case) do for them. Don't let one bad egg and experience tar everyone with the same brush!0

its not your nebous that are the problem, but the delivery driver assuming the fella want in.
IIRC you can charge them a storage fee.0 -

It is actually Littlewoods fault, they have admitted that the order was cancelled.
I would tell them that if they don't collect at a time that is convenient to you, the goods will be in the street. They can arrange an alternative courier if need be.Gone ... or have I?0 -
when the lady from customer services ring back, i will tell her to find an alternative way to collect there goods. I thought about asking for some littlewood vouchers, what do you think?Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!0

As far as I can see,you have signed for delivery NOT legal ownership or responsibility, call the customer services and tell them that the goods will be left in your garden for collection at THEIR expense, and loss, should they go missing, also phone the courier company and express your dissatisfaction with the driver for hoodwinking you into accepting delivery for something he was not able to do himself,I used to work as a temp for various couriers INCLUDING parcelforce that said to us it is multi drop if no one is in just get anybody to sign for it.I

hi
i had a similar situation to you about a month ago, i had a knock on the door and as i was waiting for some deliveries answered it, it was parcelforce, they had a del for a lady accross the road, would i mind taking it in, (bear in mind they are large) ok i said thinking that it would be gone by the evening, the delivery was a large excersize bike and another thing i cannot remember but it was large and heavy. i checked the delivery note and thought nothing of it until husband came home and said that the address on the card is the house which was sold a while ago and the person had moved out. great i thought two huge parcels stuck at the bottom of the stairs in the hallway. we phoned the estate agents as the board was still out and they managed to get hold of the lady, who said she had ordered them for her daughters birthday on the internet but had obviously forgotten to change the delivery address. well after waiting for @ 3 days for her to collect and no sign of her, the parcelforce guy came to my house with another delivery (for me) and apologised and took them away. my husband then phoned the estate agents to contact the lady and tell her they were gone. she then had the cheek to say that she was disappointed as her daughter only lived down the road and wanted to collect them, (TOUGH) .
it is very annoying having to make phone calls when the items are not even yours, could you try the delivery company as it really isnt your problem? or even perhaps go back to the house and ask if they possibly have any forwarding address?
personally i would do as your friend says either put it out the front and tell littlewoods or even in the back garden.
regards

the lesson I take from all this is never accept packages for your neighbours as it might become a liability on your time!0

I think that the lesson is don't accept packages for strangers that you've never heard of.
Accepting packages for neighbours that you know shouldn't be a problem.0
