I would have expected the tip to be left in cash and the bill settled by card (if she was paying by card). I would bring it up, point out the manager questioned the service and say to her in front of the others that part of the money was left as a tip - "you obviously didnt realise the amount when lifting the full amount - ive said to the manager someone would hand it in". Then you have been nice about it, given her an easy way out and let everyone else make their own mind up.

We usually pay and leave cash, in fact months ago when about 6 or presented separate cards to pay a bill, we all had a laugh and agreed that was really silly and that in future for girls lunches we would pay cash.

You have made me realise that I am being a coward.

Do you think if I say "I enjoyed lunch yesterday, oh by the way you owe me £30, when I picked up my card last night ******* mentioned you forgot to leave the tip, so I gave him £30, can you left me have it please?" that this would be non-threatening but still get my point across, I could get my other colleague mentioned before to witness this.

I think you should speak to the person you trust most at the lunch and tell them what happened. Ask them to send Thingy an email explaining that the manager of the restaurant has contacted them to ask if you were happy with the service because no tip was left. The email should assume that Thingy has made a mistake and ask her cough up the £34.

Totally agree with this. And get witnesses. It's not down to you to bear all this stress, get the other girls involved. And do it quickly, nothing worse than a festering situation.

I suppose she could claim she left the £30 tip and then someone stole it off the table. And no way to prove that didn't happen.

So maybe just ask everyone to chip in with the amount you are out, so you share the pain.

She blatantly picked up the £135 and put it in her purse in front or everyone, so at least I have witnesses.

I have e-mailed my other colleague -- reply was --- "she did WHAT!! Wait until I see her tomorrow!" I think I need to talk her down a bit before tomorrow morning, I hope she isn't e-mailing everyone else, all hell could break loose before I get in to work tomorrow.

Yes, this is why I suggested gathering all your evidence objectively and approaching your manager to ask them what they want you to do.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I would not involve work as this was something that happened outside work in your own time

I would tell your lunch mates.

I see a couple of issues though. You were shown receipt for £116, the amount of the bill. Does this restaurant normally issue receipts for tips? If not she can say she left it.

You need to tell another lunch friend they need to raise the issue with her and outside of work time. Your name as the instigator of what she will call "witch hunt" must not be raised as she may take this into work to imply you are turning everyone against her by alleging theft with no proof.

I assume all lunch mates heard her say she had paid by card - if she didn't she will have no proof of this.
