Can you tackle her in a way that allows her to save face? Like suggesting it was an honest mistake she made in a hurry? Even if it almost certainly wasn't, at least that way she has an "out" and is slightly less likely to dig her heels in and lie about it.

If she was a reasonable person, but when I have tried this before, she has gone on the defensive and covered her tracks by accusing me. If I tried this, I think she would say it was a mistake and that I was trying to make trouble for her and that I work behind her back to try to catch her out all the time. Personally I think she knew exactly what she was doing.
  • How about you just say something along the lines of - you forgot to leave the tip when you picked up the cash, it was £x. I'll drop it in on my way home.

If she has such an issue with you then get someone else to say this.

but, gibson - all your colleagues knew how much was on the table and how much the bill came to. I would think they would believe you when you say that only the bill was paid as its so easy for them to check.
BTW - did you leave any money for the waitress to get her tip? if not then you really need to speak to the others and have a whip round!
I am sure a bunch of intelligent women can put thier heads together and sort Thingy out! another lunch called for perhaps? definately without Thingy tho!

How about getting a copy of the receipt and showing it to the others. Don't suggest any kind of action themselves but let them decide whether to say anything/take it further. Minimal interference from you, to keep yourself out of trouble, but just say that as it was technically a part of everyone's bill/tip she stole you thought you should tell them.

If it were me I would have to say something! She stolen from you all!

Even if you don't directly say something to her, I would confide in another colleague who was part of the dinner party, and see what they think.

This is a really good idea, another colleague (same level again) has got her measure but has avoided direct conflict (unlike me) and I think she would perhaps be able to tackle this in a way that would not seem to be a re-opening of battle lines. :T
  • Gibson - you need to gather your evidence objectively from the restaurant and approach your manager and ask them what they want you to do.

They could easily call the restaurant up and get it confirmed.

It's like when someone steals the lottery syndicate money, it's not work but it's still work - and management have a duty of care to get involved and not leave it to one member of staff to deal with.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • I would have expected the tip to be left in cash and the bill settled by card (if she was paying by card). I would bring it up, point out the manager questioned the service and say to her in front of the others that part of the money was left as a tip - "you obviously didnt realise the amount when lifting the full amount - ive said to the manager someone would hand it in". Then you have been nice about it, given her an easy way out and let everyone else make their own mind up.

I made up the tip myself, I actually lied for her saying, oh we meant to leave a tip, I will get ot back from her later and handed over £30, it's turning into a very expensive lunch, I only had a vegetable cous cous and a glass of wine.

Then tell your colleague(s) this! you need to be reimbursed and I am sure they will be only too happy to!
I would have lied too! not the restaurants fault nor should they be embroiled in this!
  • I suppose she could claim she left the £30 tip and then someone stole it off the table. And no way to prove that didn't happen.

So maybe just ask everyone to chip in with the amount you are out, so you share the pain.
