  • Yes, I can see that if it now has an effect at work then it becomes the employers business.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

I cant see an employer getting involved as it was out of works time. Lots of things get done and said out of work that shouldnt be done.
Also its proving that she pinched it, she could say that she took all the money to desk or that the Manager made a mistake not her as she handed it all over and didnt check for any receipt etc. Its a big thing to be calling someone a theif and you have to be absolutley 100% sure.
Theres little you can do IMO apart from not going out for meals with her again or leaving her with any cash.If she did it then she knows which is the worst thing as her conscience will play tricks with her.
Also the restaurant has shown themselves up by being greedy and expecting a tip.Thats one of the reasons I dislike eating out, apart from the fact that food is often very poor out. They then expect to be tipped!!.What a laugh.

Disagree, the reason the manager asked was because they were used to getting tips and to not get one meant to him that something was wrong and there is a possibility that he may lose a long term customer due to it, hence why he asked.

    Not down to greed.

People get disciplined regularly for putting comments on facebook, for baring their !!!!! at a Christmas do, for buying goods in a supermarket when they were signed off sick; for all sorts of reasons. We see them every day over on the Employment board.

So you are not allowed to go and buy food when you are sick? I think that is ridiculous :(

However I do think this is a work issue as it is something that effects the workers. My DD was bullied badly outside of work by the workers. Her employer tried to claim that it had nothing to do with them as it was after work on the way home. When it was investigated her employer was found liable as she had known about the ongoing situation and had not acted to remedy it and she had a duty to sort it out. If there is bad feeling this impacts on the morale and out put.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

It is ridiculous - I don't make the rules! I said people have been disciplined for these sorts of things. Not that I thought they should be.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I think you should say something quietly to a senior staff member, as this is basically stealing!
  • Has anyone considered that the manager could have fired the waitress for either being so rubbish, regular customers didn't leave a tip for the first time ever, on suspicion of having stolen the tip - or could even have reported her to the police for the latter?

It's the reason why you always have two people going up to pay a huge bill, as has been the case at every do I've been to. It ensures you don't get issues like this.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I have never known that at that sort of price point tbh, but it's a good idea. I will remember that when I employ again (I have some one on very occasional basis who I take for lunch once a year ATM, but one day....my empire might grow.:D). I will ask dh what happens at his work trips where they go for lunch as opposed to the ones the company pays for.

Why on earth would the OP make the scarf story up? To impress a group of people she doesn't know on the internet?

If you don't believe what the OP is saying then why are you even bothering to read the thread and why on earth are you contributing to it? Do you have nothing better to do?

Because it sounds better than saying she doesn't trust her and went back to catch her out given she has already been accused of bullying the woman.

    I thought that was obvious...

The OP may well end up having to justify her actions so it might be useful to know the scarf story looks a bit suspect to some.

As your post adds nothing to the thread, you're a little cheeky getting on your high horse and demanding I explain why I've posted, but I thought I'd humour you anyway.
