Skintchick is my dd wants practical help she asks for it, at 13 she is perfectly capable of communicating her needs to me.
She wanted reassurance that her face looked ok. I could have beaten around the bush, avoided the question etc but I told her yes.
That is what she wanted to hear, it made her feel better about it.. there is no 'teasing' out of the problem, the problem is she has spots, they make her feel self conscious. Normal stuff.£608.98

It is possible to do things in a different way from the majority and still not be wrong!
The thing I like to take from these discussions is the chance to look at the way I do things and question whether that is the best way/the right way for me.0 -

Nope
It's not my fault....Friday's are slow work days.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

THat's because she is your DD. But if MY DD asked me that she'd have grown up with me, so she'd need/want a different answer to the one you would give.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

If a quick "You're fine" gives that little bit of confidence, they're out the door and don't give what you said another thought, that would be appropriate.
In your opinion. Not in mine.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

If I had said 'fine' to my son when asked such a question, he would have thought I wasn't listening to him. He would find it dismissive.
What skintchick says is correct, different families have different dynamics. We have never sugar-coated the pill in ours and he would not expect such an answer from us.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

No, it's knowing what's right for the person involved - that's why the sentence had the "If" at the beginning.0 -

And that's not patronising at all, of course.
