Are you able to service your car yourself? That might help with car costs x

Would love to learn how to do that but am pushed for time during term time and the thought of doing it in the rain and cold is not welcoming. I like the idea of saving the money and being skilled in that area though. Good suggestion! Kerri, do you do yours? :):):):):):)

I did it this year, cost me £25 for a new oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, then I fluttered my eyelashes at my mechanic friend who did the oil change in exchange for veggie lasagne. The oil change bit might be cheating, but the rest was really easy to change. I think if I had taken it for an oil change otherwise it would have cost about £30 - £40. Oh, and it took me 5 minutes to find the parts online & order, then 10 to fit the different parts. Definitely recommend it, it's not as big and scary as we may think at all.

Brilliant! May try it in the summer. It's laziness and lack of time with me. Would get a buzz out of doing that and saving some brass.

What did you do exactly? Give us a list. Replace spark plugs? Tracking? Tyre Pressure? Check spare wheel?

Your car should come with a service book, it tells you at which levels it needs different parts doing to it. So mine I know needs a new air filter and oil filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months. If I didn't know a mechanic I would have done the oil change myself by taking it to my Dads and getting him to help me. The air and pollen filter were super easy, you just locate them and pop them out & the new ones in. I couldn't believe how easy that was. Spark plugs are relatively easy too from what my Dad has shown me before. If in doubt there's always someone on Youtub showing us how :D

Tracking only needs to be done if one side of the tyre is more worn than another (this is if you hit the curb lots, which I haven't done in ages, but this shows up on MOT you can't MOT yourself unfortunately). Tyres, use a 20p piece to check how worn they are, and pressure you can do at the SM for 20p. The rim of the 20p should be inside the tyre if its lower then you need new tyres.

Shall I finish this for you?
...it can't be that difficult!'. Boom boom

I'm thinking of selling my car - it cost ne a lot to keep on the road (tax, insurance, servicing etc) and I live where the public transport us excellent. It has also made me really lazy and my husband has a car.
I just feel really guilty about having it really - I got itin easier times....
    Trying to keep in budget.

  • I cannot go anywhere near my bike to service it.. one thing wrong and I am a goner. Got the "book" that was recommended - then laughed..
Might take a course next year if I can.. But well done all of you for doing this all yourself!! Am so proud of you all...
