Not dieting, not counting calories/carbs etc...just eating healthily. Anyone else?

  • I'm definitely one of the 'sensible eating not dieting' brigade :)

    I follow this plan - http://www.nosdiet.com/

Although it's called a diet, it's really a way of eating moderately for life. Kind of like starting at maintenance. The rules are this - no sweets, no snacks and no seconds, except sometimes on days that begin with S. That means Saturdays, Sundays and 'sick' days mainly, although also any 'special' days (like birthdays, holidays etc.) You don't have to buy any expensive products, cut out any specific foods or count anything. I've been following it loosely for about 6 months and have lost about 10 pounds. Not a huge amount, but given the fact that I don't really have to try it's not bad. The weight is bound to come off slowly as it's not really about creating a huge calorie deficit, more about creating good eating habits. Plus, in the years before doing it I was slowly but surely gaining weight which I'm not any more so at least that's something!

The downside to doing the No S Diet is that weekends can seem like a free-for-all. You don't have to follow any rules, and the idea is that the weekends are a release valve which is more sustainable over time than trying to cut out things for months or years on end and then feeling like a failure when you inevitably crack and giving up altogether... I've pretty much got the no sweet/seconds/snacks during the week down. Two or three solid meals and I'm good. I need to work on my weekend eating though if I want to see better results!

    The thread has gone quiet.

I should have posted for some encouragement last week! Disastrous as I hsve put on 3lbs!

Feeling down, so consoled myself with comfort food. Then when up again, there have been two great rugby weekends. Wine just slips down.

Given myself a talking to! Had a good walk in the freezing cold today, so start again!

I've also been up and down, but in my defence my shoulder injury and then spraining my ankle didn't help matters, oh and on my birthday WEEKEND I went WILD!!!!!!!!! I've just gotten back on track!

I've invested in aslow cooker, so have been experimenting, sticking to my paleo "diet", the weight has dropped off again, PHEW!?

I've also made paleo macaroons, taste sooooo good and I don't feel guilty! I'm going to make something else this weekend!

    !

I went to this link and had a read through. What they say makes perfect sense. I lost weight a good few years ago by following roughly the same principle, but then I went back to eating what I wanted during the week too. I think you definitely have to be in the right frame of mind for any weight loss programme.

I also lost weight with slimming world, but I found myself craving white toast and jam. I know I could have still eaten them if I'd counted them as 'syns', but it always felt like I wasn't allowed.

I read an interesting article recently that says dieting doesn't work:
    http://www.newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/Dieting-Does-Not-Work-UCLA-Researchers-7832.aspx

A little depressing, but I reckon that the main message is that restrictive diets where you have to focus really hard on exactly what you eat don't work long term because they are unsustainable. As soon as you stop eating that way, the weight creeps on for the majority of people. That doesn't mean that slowly changing your habits to overall eat healthier and more moderately won't work though - if you are losing weight by eating in a way you can sustain indefinitely, that's got to be better right?

That being said I've been rubbish the last couple of weeks, a virus knocked me out and I've got into bad comfort-eating habits! Need to get back on plan :)

    Hi Hun,

That link doesn't seem to work for me, but I totally agree with what you're saying.

When you're not feeling well it's so easy to just want comfort foods xx

Oops, think I've fixed it now!

It's a shame salad isn't a comfort food :D Mind you, I absolutely love a nice piece of grilled or oven baked chicken or fish, sweet potato mash and some kind of veg on the side, feels comforting to me and also kind of virtuous! Must remember that next time I'm reaching for the pizza...

Sorry, i haven't posted for a while now!

I am feeling the urge to weigh myself for the first time in a while, but still haven't bought any scales. I might ask a friend if i can use hers after Easter.

Glad to see some new people here, welcome :)

Thanks for the link Mildred, interesting reading! I have had enough of dieting, and do not believe it works at all, hence the reason i started this thread. I am fed up of listening to people talk about calories/points/fat grams/carbs...i just want to eat normally and lose a bit of weight :D
