Sports Direct Gift Cards

Hi. I have 4 Sports Direct gift cards totalling roughly about £150 and quite frankly I want rid of them. There is nothing in the store that I want and the cards cannot be used online  Therefore I am planning to sell them on ebay for whatever I can get.

My son took them into our local store yesterday to check the balance on the cards as some had been left blank, and meeting up with the usual rude and surly staff was informed that it was only possible to check the balance when you are purchasing something. So that means that I have got to buy something from their awful store just to check how much money I have left on the cards???

I am going into the shop personally today so would like some clarification on this matter if anyone can help please? Where do I stand on this? Thank you.

Jumping to conclusions, you wern't even there, you sound like a snob. approach them with some manners and you might get somewhere.
  • How rude! This is my first visit to the site and if this is the way you treat visitors it's a wonder anyone bothers to post.
  • And I would like to draw your attention to the 'Alert! Newbie' sign on the left which requests that you give new members a bit of leeway. My first experience on here has not been a nice one thanks to you!

If it has already been explained in-store that the balance isn't available without purchasing something a return trip to be told the same seems pretty pointless. I would be looking looking for a phone or email contact for head office as they will probably have more access to the cards.

You do appear to be going to store with a certain attitude towards the staff though. They are just a person same as yourself, i doubt sports direct employ people to be rude and I think your generalisation is a little unfair.

I actually agree with the OP on this one. The staff aren't very friendly or helpful in our local Sports Direct. So I stopped going there. When you ask politely to get a certain size down from the racks in the gods, you are met with dirty looks, heaven knows what it would be like if you asked for a choice of colours to compare.

Can't comment on the cards though, it's not something I would have...

  • Me neither Mazza111, but they were given to my son by a well meaning relative.

I believe in treating like with like, and every single time I have been in that store I have been treated like something they've found on the bottom of their shoe. Consequently I find it very difficult to be polite and mannerly when they have no interest in reciprocating likewise. If you don't believe me just google 'Reviews for Sports Direct' and you will soon get the gist of what I am saying. There are a lot of people out there that feel the same way.

I shall endeavour to find a number for customer services - Thank you.

I thought that perhaps they were just giving my son the runaround as he is only 15 and was in his school uniform. They have no patience with regular customers so I can't really see them going out of their way to help a schoolboy.
  • Let's see if I got this right .. They are vouchers given to your son by a relative. There is nothing in Sports Direct that you liked. Is there anything in the shop that your son would like since they are supposed to be his vouchers.
I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.
  • No, I'm afraid he's looked and can't see anything he wants. It would be much easier if they could be redeemed online as there is a far greater choice on the website. He would prefer to sell them and use the money to get something he really wants.

Or maybe rather than jumping to conclusions, ops son presented her with the facts. And I can't see any reason he would lie to her. In fact considering we're talking about Sports Direct here it's highly plausible the staff was rude.

As for approaching them with "some manners" - you're now the one jumping to conclusions by making out the son didn't use his manners on the original visit.

What a ridiculously rude response by you !!

As for ops dilemma, op, i'm not sure of their procedure relating to the balances - but it seems ridiculous they cannot tell you the balance without buying something at the same time. I can't think of any other place to not be able to give you such basic information at the swipe of a card, although I can't say i've ever had a great deal of gift cards, but this includes starbucks, costa and BHS.
