Look, I asked a simple question and now it's digressed into 'Who sorts out my relative's affairs?, What was my son doing in his school uniform on a Sunday?, And why haven't I kept a written record of every transaction I've ever made?!' I'm beginning to wish I'd never asked now! :(

OK, I'll restrict myself to your question.

Yes it is perfectly legal to charge you for a service.
They have advised you the cost of that service, make any purchase, beforehand, haven't they?

What, to run a scanner over a barcode? No wonder the owner of the company is a multi-millionaire!

Actually, thinking about it a second time, they're not even charging for the service are they?
Just making a purchase a condition of providing the, otherwise free, service.

    However... just as legal. ;)

How long do they actually last as you don't want to loose the money altogether.

Btw, if he has a carer that is in charge/has access to his financial affairs, they should still have the receipt as they are usually required by the care co-ordinator to keep extensive and highly accurate records when dealing with the care receivers money. If he has any money in the house, it is usually a requirement for them to check the amount at the start of their shift and again at the end (while being double checked by the person they are handing over from/to).

Any action they should be taking (re: his financial affairs) should be detailed in his care plan (a copy of which should be in the house for the carer).

So in short, it may be worth asking his carer if he/she knows where the receipt is. Of course this depends on whether his carer did it because he's not able to get out of the house or whether he actually needs help with his financial affairs. If its the former, the care plan may say to give him all receipts. If its the latter, they should have detailed records.

Personally if somebody gave me a gift voucher for a shop I never use I wouldn't be asking for the receipt to get it refunded at the risk of seeming ungrateful.

Why all this talk about a receipt for a gift card?

Is a gift card refundable after three months?

Is a part used gift card refundable after three months?

I always hand over the receipt when I give a gift voucher just in case they need to prove it's theirs.
It's no big secret how much the voucher has cost me.
