Tips that really make your life easier

In a hurry today, and desperate for some tapenade (I know - middle class drama!) I picked up some olives and it wasn't until I got them home that I realised they had not been pitted. I was almost resigned to a long evening of stoning them by hand, but was inspired to do a quick check online to see if there was an easy way to do it. Lo and behold, I found a recipe which had a handy hint right at the end advising that if you squash them with a wooden spoon, the stone is really easy to remove. It's true and I'm really pleased that now I have a tip I can use for the rest of my life. It made me wonder if anyone else had chanced across a handy hint which has made a big difference to the way they do things?

You don't have to waste time peeling mushrooms.....Honestly! I never have and I'm still alive!

This one is probably really sad, but I was reflecting on it today :)

I have 3 messy kids and laundry has always been a huge chore in my household. Last week when I was having some plumbing work done anyway, I had the plumbers swap the washing machine and tumbledrier round, so that the doors of each open away from each other and also plumb the condenser drier in using a hose, so that I no longer have to empty the water tank after each wash. And two really simple changes, which can only save about 30 seconds each wash, have made life so much easier that for the first time in months I am up to date with the laundry :D (but not with the ironing, sigh)

Cravendale milk. It seems to never go off. Always keep one unopened in the fridge and the open one will last as long as you need. We've gone 2 weeks happily.x

Home made ready meals, cooking double of something and freezing it. A godsend when you can't be arsed.

When you can't open a jar, bang the underside rim on the edge of something and it really loosens it ( if that makes sense!)
  • bang the top of the lid in the middle with the handle of (say) a knife
much safer than banging the underside of the lid on a surface, and works the same

In a house of five males, buy all plain black socks and put them in a basket, no pairing of socks, ever.

I always use a spoon as a kind of lever under the lid, when you push down it lets air in and breaks the seal. Never fails!

I also second lazy garlic. I buy the frozen ready chopped bags, it has been a revelation!

DD (autistic and doesn't really pay much attention to what her clothes look like) and I don't mind wearing black socks with everything either! This is a genius tip!
