Do you do things just because your Mum did?

I don't get it either, (especially the hair washing, what's all that about??) but it seems to be something women were told back in the Good Old Days, and I guess for many of them in that generation it's hard to get the idea out of their head once that 'fear', if you like, has been instilled in them. Why would you not bath or wash hair during a period? I don't get it!
.. the thought of going without washing/showering/bathing while you're on your period _pale_!0 -
This thread is great, thanks OP
I peel mushrooms and put a cross in the sprouts, no idea why but that's the way mum does it
She also used to do the first footing with coal at New Year but sadly none of us have coal fires any moreIf you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. - Mark TwainNappies and government ministers need to be changed frequently and for the same reason0 -
No hair washing or baths during a period
Thats a shocker! I felt mingine enough throughout my period without having to refrain from washing.
I'd feel like ringing a bell in front of me to announce that i was unclean!!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I would shower during my period, but generally not take a bath (unless I had a shower first!)Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
Never wash mushrooms or put crosses on sprouts (makes them soggy). Then my Mother never did this either. There again she was as opposite to her mother as she could be. The water for lunch cabbage would be put on at 6am when they all came home for lunch at noon. Eggs could be used as rubber bullets and everything was overcooked, but they all survived.Truth always poses doubts & questions. On the mushroom thing, I just flick off any bits of compost, I did used to do it with a mushroom brush that someone bought for me, but I can't find it now! I then use the whole thing, head, foot, top, cap, stalk, whatever you care to call it.
I clean the house before going on holiday, it's just nicer to come back to, not something I remember my Mum doing. Besides - what if you never came back - what would people think of your grubby house when they had to clear it out?
Mum always put a pinch of salt in with the flour when making cakes or pastry or scones, so I always do. I also salt the water when cooking veg, as she did. Love salt on a boiled egg (after each nibble) so maybe I just love salt.
Mum used to wash my hair with Vosene shampoo, I wonder if it still smells the same? Pears soap is quite different these days, they changed the recipe.

Smells the same but not as intense. Its a more watered down product though than the vosene i used as a child. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I used to pre-cook lasagne sheets before making a lasagne, just because my mum always did, and then I realised that was a total waste of time!
I also cut up old clothes (vests, t-shirts etc) and use them as cleaning cloths, just like my mum

Just had a thought - I do leave the oven open until it goes cold, & leave the vacuum cleaner out to cool off in case it sets fire, just like Mom does
I rinse spoons to stop them staining like Dad did too. 0
