I am trying my hardest not to be my mum! But the more the years go on I say things and realize I am turning into my mother.2018 wins: Scottish weekend break, london weekend break and hotel chocolat hamper0

I was always told the bath/hairwash/period thing by my Nan (although I took no notice); she always claimed I'd catch a cold. Mind you, she had a loo in a shed at the bottom of the garden (yep, with a cutout bunch of grapes in the wooden door), a gazunder, and a tin bath hanging on the kitchen wall that she boiled saucepans for ... mostly she strip-washed at the kitchen sink. Hot water from a tap was unheard of for her. The only heating was a log fire in the front room, so even in summer it was freezing there when we stayed overnight."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

I did things specifically because my mother didn't. And vice versa.
It's a fairly good rule for life, actually, thinking what she would have done and then doing the exact opposite.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Ive loved reading this thread!!!
Things i do that mum does:
Cant stand things on the floor. They go in the wardrobe or the washing basket. No exceptions.
No wet towels on the bed under any circumstances
Cupboard doors and drawers should ALWAYS be closed! Cant stand them half open or not shut properly! lol
Rinse plates before they go into the dishwasher
Its only cold in the house when youve got a jumper on and you still feel cold.
The heating goes on no earlier than October (think this is a northern thing!!)
Always add salt to eggs
Always cook in salted water
Neither of us can stand crumbs on the kitchen worksurface!!!
Mum always goes with the dark haired stranger at new year - something ive never followed although i did cry with laughter when she rang me at 3.30am last new year to tell me that shed gotten out of the taxi after her night out, told the taxi driver to get out and walk into the house and then back out again, said Thanks very much, Goodbye! And shut the door!!!
The poor bloke was apparently beweildered!! lol£2 Savers Club #156!

This thread is brilliant!
Some things that my mum does are;
- Clean the house before going on holiday
- Leave open the oven door after it's been used to heat up the kitchen in winter
- Iron towels, dusters, socks, underpants
- Wash curtains every 3 months
- Never leave the house in the morning without making your bed
- Put your clothes for next day on the radiator so they're warm when you get up in the morning (in winter)
- Peel veg in front of the tv into a plastic bag
- Tidy up toys before sitting down for the evening
(I don't even do half of these)0 -
I also salute magpies for luck like my mum does. If a magpie is alone you have to salute it and say "Good morning/afternoon Mr Magpie and how's your wife?" My boyfriend thinks it's hilarious, I never thought it was strange until he pointed it out. I do it when I'm alone too, I just do a small salute with 1 finger and mutter it under my breath
Ahh i do this too, though i picked it up from my nan
I did worry i was the only one so feel a bit less weird knowing someone else does it too! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I always say hello to the magpies x0
