    brill thread btw! loving it

i do things my mother did but they are more superstitions though so a wee bit off topic -

never put new shoes on a table
    don't open an umberella indoors
never ever EVER cut your nails on a sunday!

the last one has had such an impact on me i wont let my wife cut her nails or the baby's even if its needed lol

    These and more :)

Always salute a magpie, cover all mirrors in a thunderstorm and leave a door open so that if lightening strikes it will just go out the door :o, on the first day of every month say "white rabbits" whilst walking backwards.

    My gran was hugely superstitious.

This reminds me - never ever wear old underwear/socks no matter how comfortable they are or who you think will see you in them (or rather not), if you get knocked over by bus on the street what will they think of you when they need to undress you..

My cousin is an A&E nurse and once dismissed this theory by saying that if you get hit by a bus your underwear won't be clean then anyway, so no one will know if it is old or new. :p

Also why would someone in the street be taking off your trousers if you'd been hit..:eek:

There are plenty of things that I quite deliberately DON'T do that my mother does, but I do:

    - Only condition the length of my hair, even if the top needs some attention.

    - Fill the hot water bottle from the kettle.

I didn't know there was another way of doing it? its not hot enough for long enough if you just use a hot tap ;)

    - Rinse dishes after washing up.

I do this - but my Mum doesn't. I learned this from my OH's side of the family.

    - Never say no to an animal needing a home.

isn't it strange what you do that you just think is the only right way to do it?

My Mum and sister both drape a teatowel over stuff on the draining board - drives me nuts. How is it supposed to dry if the air can't get to it?

This thread reminds me of a story my mum told me of a woman who every time she cooked Sunday lunch cut a sliver off the beef before she put it in the oven. One day her husband asked her why she did it, 'I don't know' she replied 'my mum always did it'. So they went to her mother and asked 'mum, why do you always cut a slice off the beef before you cook it?', mum replied 'I don't know, your gran always did it'. So they went round to the grans house, 'gran why do you always cut a slice off the beef before you cook it?'. Gran looked at them and replied, 'because the joint was always so big, I couldn't fit it in The oven unless I cut a slice off the end!'

    :D I always loved that story :D

The one thing I always do that my mother did is to turn nearly empty bottles upside down on top of the new bottle and leave overnight so the dregs fall out :o

And I peel mushrooms too, never thought about why before

I am so superstitious about magpies, i cover all bases by pinching myself, saluting and saying "hello Mr Magpie, how's the wife and kids?"
The fact that i have loads of magpies living in the trees outside my house makes my morning fag outside very busy!
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

Never heard of the saluting magpies but if i see one i always look for another....one for sorrow, two for joy?

Mum always smashes eggshells before she puts them in the bin 'so the witches cant use them as boats' or something.

as for housework, mum has the attitude that dust is a protective layer for the furniture. my dad once wrote 'dusty' on a side table and she just wrote 'springfield' underneath it. as long as the beds, toilet and kitchen were clean mum didnt bother about dust or mess, just sat either knitting, embroidering or doing jigsaws.
I on the other hand love nothing more than having a good 'blitz' and cleaning every corner.Nothing better than a day doing that, then a nice bath and pj's on sitting in a clean house. bliss!!:D

I did things specifically because my mother didn't. And vice versa.

It's a fairly good rule for life, actually, thinking what she would have done and then doing the exact opposite.

That's interesting. I think we do a bit of both. DH was brought up in a large, chaotic household and he and many of his siblings are very organised (anal even IMO;)) about housework.
