I find myself counting the cost of the items that I put in my trolly/basket when in the supermarket so that I know if there has been a mistake made at the checkout (also so that I can have the money ready)
I am able to do this in my head but with her large family, mum used a pen & paper, neither of our methods were/are more than a few pence out so mistakes are easy to spot.
  • I've heard of peeling mushrooms, but it's not something I've ever done...

From my mum, it's more a case of habits I HAVEN'T adopted!

The one that jumps out at me... For my parents, 10pm is bedtime. Has been for as long as I can remember. If a tv programme goes on past 10pm, they'll quite seriously go "ohh... that's past our bedtime..." They are like children!
I thought they'd relax it a bit once they retired, but nope. 10pm remains bedtime to this day. And getting up time is 7:15 to 7:30, irregardless of the day. Lie-in's simply don't exist to them!

Whereas, for me, I go to bed when I'm tired/bored! It might be 9:30, it might be 10:30. I'm much more go with the flow.
Because it's fun to have money!

  • I thought of a few more!

Everything is always ironed - bed linen, pants, socks, tea towels! Everything!!
The oven door is always left open when the oven has been switched off to let the heat warm the kitchen
The bed is ALWAYS made before you get into it. I cant stand to get into an unmade bed - much to my OH amusement! (although he is now trained to make the bed! HAHA!)
Mayo goes in the fridge but ketchup never does! :)

Oh, and this once isnt mine but my OH's grandparents swear that their secret to a long and healthy life (theyre 90 odd now) is a glass of gin and a crunchie :) I can go with that!

We were talking about some of the odd things you remembered from childhood a few weeks ago and it reminded me of something my Dad would do that I hadn't thought about in years.

Every so often he would cook himself supper and he called it a cheese and egg delicacy.

It was always cooked on a Pyrex plate and was simply grated cheddar with an egg cracked in the middle then put in the oven until the cheese was bubbling and the egg was cooked. He would eat it with a slice of bread and butter.

I tried it out of curiosity and it's rather good, if a little basic by today's standards. I did toast rather than bread though.

I suppose a more trendy variation is the baked Camembert and french bread.

My grandma used to make that. I loved it!

She and my mum used to also rolls balls of butter in sugar for us whenever we had a sore throat. (Until I started pretending I had a sore throat just so I could have some. :o )

I called at the parents at lunchtime and mentioned it to mum, she said that he used to either put HP sauce on it after it was cooked or Lea & Perrins before it went in the oven. :D

  • When the time comes to replace an old hot water bottle, before I throw the old bottle in the bin, I always remove and save the stopper - just as my mum used to do. As things have turned out, it's proven to be a totally wasted exercise as I've never ever used any of them again. In future I'll probably just let them go out with the bottle!

I have never peeled a mushroom either?! Just give them a wipe and chop them up, stalk and all!

I'm loyal to certain brands because that's what my Mum used, such as Comfort fabric conditioner and Imperial Leather soap and always only ever Birds Eye Petit Pois. The peas are always cooked in a little water in the microwave rather than boiled, not sure why but its how my parents cooked them so it's how I cook them! :)

I always have to clean the house before going on holiday and the bed has to have fresh sheets so it's nice when we get home. :) I also have to have a good tidy/clean 2 days before Christmas too, doesn't matter if we've got guests or not, it has to be nice for Father Christmas! :)

There are certain things that she does that I realised weren't so great once I moved in with my DH. Like she only uses a cloth and a scouring pad for washing dishes, so when we moved in together those were the only things I thought to buy. When DH bought some scrubby sponges and Brillo pads I was amazed at how much easier life became and now struggle to wash dishes at her house! :rotfl:

Have really enjoyed reading this thread!

We usually peel mushrooms, but we don't throw the stalks away, we cook them too.

I never iron bed sheets/pillowcases or pyjamas, it's all just extra work. The same goes for pants, socks and tea towels.

I've never rinsed dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. If you're going to do this, you might as well just wash them in the sink anyway.

Breakfast cereals such as rice krispies, cornflakes, I eat with hot or cold milk. But weetabix or ready brek must be with hot milk.

One thing I have to do is rinse out glass/plastic jars and bottles before putting them in the recycling.

  • I follow my mother in many, many things.

I've stopped having debt (she hates credit cards), I don't peel mushrooms (just a wipe will do), I don't do ironing unless absolutely essential (I don't buy dress shrits anymore) I think hoovering is something that only happens when it really needs to, I am happy to pay for a meal if it means I don't have to cook it or wash up and the more like her I get, the happier I am.

My mum is brilliant. I'd be quite honoured if I turned out like her.

Edit: I don't clean house before I go on holiday, I am going on holiday! Who cares if it's a bit messy when I get back?
