mushrooms are grown in sterile compost
i never understood why anyone would peel them
i use a (only used for this) paint brush to brush them off before use
lakeland do mushroom brushes (but no mushroom peelers
)
and to throw away the stalks?
when i was taught to cook, they were always used for stock
i dont think i do anything like my mum
we are VERY different people

Mushrooms probably used to be peeled because they weren't grown, as now, in sterilised "growing medium", but were likely to be field mushrooms picked from fields where, guess what, animals had cr***ed. Or in rotting vegetation which again might not be without bacteria (and tiny little worms in the stalks). Indeed, I often find my best wild field mushrooms where cows have recently been kept...
Thank goodness my mum taught me the old ways of household budgeting - roast on Sunday, cold roast with baked potato on Monday, minced up roast (with lots of bulking diced root veg) for cottage pie on Tuesday, Fray Bentos steak & kidney pie, Vesta curry, Findus crispy pancakes... oh no, 70s style fast foods! She loved the freedom from meat and two veg

Even if mushrooms are grown in sterile compost, it's still not edible is it? I also peel them - all the while thinking - I probably don't need to do this.
Who knew there were such strong opinions on mushrooms out there!0 -
I never peel my mushrooms OR wash them.....and I eat the leg.
Does that mean I'm going to die?0 -
Eurgh all this talk of mushrooms is making me squemish (i'm phobic of them)
:rotfl:
Jmm things i've picked up from my mum: For some reason i won't go to bed with wet hair (yes i know i wont catch a cold but i cant help but dry it before i do go to bed), have a cleaning day to thouroughly clean the house (hers is sunday-mine is saturday), add vineger to the water when poaching eggs, and that's all i can think of atm. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I would look like a witch in the morning if I went to bed with wet hair:-)0 -

me too - I've never heard of anyone peeling their mushrooms or not eating the stalk - I wash them briefly to get any loose dirt off them then chop them up, stalk and all

My grandad, god bless him, got himself barred from Somerfield when he was in his 70's. He would take the stalks off the mushrooms in the shop so they wouldn't add to the weight and he didn't have to pay for them. He had a number of warnings and they finally barred him

Why would you not bath or wash hair during a period? I don't get it!0
