  • Hello

I am about to proceed and try to get my bank charges back. I have looked at my online statements and have seen numerous fees from them. Am I able to claim back charges of £35 for when I havent had enough money for a £1 item or is it just for say the £28 unauthorised arranged overdraft fee?

Hope I get something from them!

  • A while ago I posted on here an idea to charge the banks for the junk mail they insist on posting through my letterbox in an attempt to get more money out of me, my idea was to charge them for reciveing the junkmail, seeing as the banks are fond of charging us everytime we go overdrawn even by a few pence then charging us upto £35 for the inconveniece to them, how bout we charge them for junk mail?
I have included the standard letter , any better ones are accepted..

Due to the nature of received material ( i.e: Junk mail or ‘services offered’), not relating to my account , or details thereof, I feel that I must return said articles and hereby give notice that any ‘unwarranted’ mail will result in a charge being issued by myself against your company.

This charge will be calculated in the following format.

Item received, opened, read and then re-enveloped and posted via recorded mail back to the address of the rear of the original envelope.

Said charges will include my time spent analysing the material as to whether or not it is related to my account, plus postage costs.
A breakdown of the charge will be included with the returned mail.

Charges will vary in relation to the interest rates set by the Bank of England. And charges may go up as well as down.

This instance of mortgage advice (not wanted) will be charged at £50
    Breakdown:

2 Hours reading and digesting information given in your leaflet at £27.50 per hour
    Recorded mail £ 5.00.

I will therefore be expecting a cheque to arrive no later than 14 days after the item has been returned via recorded post.

    Yours sincerely

Thing is mate, there's already legislation to protect you from that. By all means write in and ask to opt out of all marketing communications. This will be done - because if it isn't you can report them to the data commission and they will incur a fine worth £millions, rather than £5 here or there

It used to drive me nuts when I worked in direct mail and angry customers would send back offensive letters, or torn up leaflets, with no information about who they were. We therefore couldn't remove them from the database, and they would continue to recieve the latest offers. This was despite having a really clear and up-front "opt in / opt out" process, apparently ignored by these people.

Save yourself some agro - if you don't like marketing, opt out of it. Don't try to start some kind of fight.

So I wrote to Halifax on 1st August 2007 requesting my last 6 years worth of charges which arrived some 10 days later. I wrote again on 23rd August 07, requesting the return of £2069 of bank charges and have not heard anything since.

I've been trawling through my more recent statements since my claim and have discovered another £1116 of charges (i'm crp with money lol:confused:). Am I within my rights to claim this back as well??

I was thinking of writing to them regarding the new charges and enclosing my original letter which I have kept. Is anyone in similar position or know what to do??

    Hi All

My 21 yr old step son has managed to get himself in quite a bit of debt and so now we are trying to help him get all the creditors paid back and start on a budget. I was looking through the website and got to checking out this refund of bank charges, he had £90 in one month of charges! (although Halifax seem to have been crafty and charged him the money over 2 months to ensure they don't go over their charging limits). He's also had hundreds of pounds over the past few years and it all adds up to around £1000.

He is 21 yrs old, earns £1000 a month, lives on his own, he had just had a court hearing due to unpaid rent on his council flat (told us after the fact!) and been ordered to increase his payments to cover back rent and court costs. His TV license has not been paid in 6 months, his council tax is behind in payment and he regularly goes over his overdraft limit. So my question is, any advice on whether he meets the criteria for hardship? I've taken a look on the website and he does meet many of the points but not all of them. He hasn't lost a job or pay and isn't ill in any way.

Also, after going through everything the best solution we can see is to lend him £500 to cover the immediate costs so that he doesn't lose his house and he can start to get back on track. I'll be doing his budget so he will get out of it but if we cover the immediate serious problems then will he no longer qualify to claim?

    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks
  • I recently wrote to the Halifax requesting refund of £56 unauthorised overdraft charges. Got a reply yesterday stating that the compliant is on hold pending the ongoing test case, which is fair enough.

However, I have also received notification of two further unauthorised O/D charges that they intend to apply, the first of which will be on 30 June. I don't understand why they plan to do this as the a/c is now in credit - possibly because it was still overdrawn on a specific day on which the charges were triggered.

Anyway, I obviously don't want to pay these additional charges so plan to close the account before June 30. My question is, would this action adversely affect my chances of getting the charges refunded?

    Thanks for any advice.
