My son is not a student but works for the Weatherspoons chain. What has incensed us is the lack of communication from the bank with regard to these 'referral charges'.We have now moved to barclays, but in taking their time with moving regular payments, yet again more charges will have accrued!0

Hi all.Tis is my 1st thread so please bare with me.I asked for copies of my charges from Halifax c.c. which I received quite quickly, added them up,sent off letter asking for refund, sorted.Today I received a letter stating they were looking into my complaint for me and my concern would be responded to within 4 weeks. Now I'm confused,as I can't find anything of this nature in Martins info pages regarding what I should do in this senario, can anyone shed some light as to what I should do next,if anything,cheers.0

If you gave them 14 days in your letter as per Martin's template then follow it up with the second letter giving a further 14 days to respond or you will be taking further action.0 -
Hi, I wonder if somebody can help someone who doesn't quite understand this situation.
Something has just come to my attention. I bank online (paper free) with Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS). I set up an overdraft for about £150 roughly 18 months ago. After about 10 or 12 months I realised this wasn't going to be enough, so I increased it to £250.
I didn't often look at my paper free documents until recently. I have messages with 'Bank Account Charge Notification'.
I recieved an email with the above title on the dates;
02/SEP/07
15/NOV/07
02/JAN/08
02/MAY/08
03/JUN/08
02/JUL/08
In the e-mail it says;Dear XX
We are writing to make you aware that as you do not have an arranged overdraft and you have gone overdrawn, you will be charged a monthly Unauthorised Overdraft Charge of £28.00. This will be taken from your account on the 30th August 2008. Please make sure that you have enough money in your account to cover this charge.
We will also charge you debit interest on any overdraft. The monthly unauthorised interest rate will apply to the amount which is overdrawn without agreement.
What I don't understand is that I DO have an arranged overdraft. In the dates I posted above I think I have only gone over my overdraft of £250 once (last month a direct debit came off and I didn't have enough to cover it, so I can understand on this occasion)
However I know for a fact that in May & Jun this year I never went over my arranged £250 overdraft. I can't say for a fact that the other months I didn't go over but I am 90% sure I didn't.
OK - If HBOS charge me £28 for using their overdraft I understand. (not happy, but if that's their terms...) If this is the case, I'll live on beans on toast for the next month to be sure I don't give the bank a button.
However, I always thought that you did not pay anything to use an (agreed) overdraft facility, and as it says in the email, they charge interest on anything you borrow.
Thanks in advance, just want to clear this up.
Don't like giving money to the bank when I'm trying to save for my future!0 -

Have you queried it before?
What response did you have from the bank about the overdraft?
Was the overdraft ever confirmed in writing?
Hi
I queried it a few days ago. They told me the charge was for going over my overdraft limit. Which I did. However I did not realise at the time of asking that I had also been charged £28.00 on more than one occasion for times where I have merely used the arranged overdraft and not gone over it.
I think I did recieve a written confirmation, but did not ever think to keep it? Besides the point, if they didn't set it up, who did? Shouldn't really need confirmation of any sort. :mad:0 -
You need confirmation that they have agreed to the overdraft. You apply for an overdraft but they can say NO as well as YES. I would clarify with them the dates the overdraft was applied to your account.
Have you kept accurate records as to when you applied for the overdraft?0 -
