I am very reluctant to give anything other than a positive and 5* but the moment a seller suggests they are expecting me to claim- or even suggests I might like the COP then the stars beging to fall.

Go further and tell me they want me to claim and the positive is lost and I start deciding between a neutral and a neg.

If forums like MSE do one thing- it should be to educate buyers in their rights to expect fair treatment whoever they buy from- whether private or business. As a seller myself I am hard on other sellers who don't really 'get' ebay, as every unhappy customer they have is potentially a person that will not be buying on ebay again. That ultimately affects my pool of buyers

  • Hi definitely ring their local sorting office. I posted a parcel in January to my neice, after 4 weeks they still hadn't received it. I rang their local sorting office and it was sat there waiting to be collected. Seems they had never seen the collection card. It will only sit in the sorting office for a while before they return to sender if they can.

    Hope it gets sorted!

P.S. what is the buyers feedback like, is there any previous disputes???

I may have to step back from some threads I think. I really thought that ebay users were generally beginning to get a better understanding of how it all works- but threads recently are suggesting that some people are wallowing about in mud with half remembered bits of urban myths and bits that some friemd told them was the way it all works.

I find it distressing that despite warnings, posts, threads, conversations etx some people really do not have even a basic understanding of UK law- not even ebay or paypal, but UK law.

I think eBay should do away with buyer FB altogether, it makes no difference to anything and the only things it does do are confuse sellers as to their role in the transaction (you get paid, you send, you solve any problems) and their buyers (to pay, end of), and makes sure a lot of feedback gets left in return.

eBay have recently taken item descriptions out of buyer feedback. Perhaps they should go further and remove comments, so there is nowhere to put any 'buyer has not paid' or 'item never arrived' instances. A simple transaction count where the item has been paid through Paypal would suffice if buyers really want feedback - but I suspect its existence would not be missed after people who formerly received it simply for paying for something adjusted. There are some sites like ASOS where sellers demand the ability to leave buyer feedback but probably will never get it (even the CS reps staffing their forums respond to such requests with 'Learn from the feedback given to improve your service'), and some sites like Amazon where the system has dwindled away to nothing. eBay should follow suit.

I've had about 7 INR issues on eBay as a buyer and only left two non-positives, but I have to refrain from leaving FB in the event of a voluntary seller refund for an item that never shows up because I don't want to look like a scammer to some people.

It's enough to make me usually think twice about buying on eBay, there is so much choice out there some sellers are really daft to treat their customers this way.

  • So let me get this right.

I buy a coat from you.

    It isn't delivered.

You want to refund me less the postage.

You are contemplating telling me to claim.

Now put yourself in my shoes.

  • Ok let me clarify a few things. Also, I am an average guy dealing with this kind of situation for the first time. If you have a political agenda on world peace or the legal education of mankind please go home.

Coat - Was wrapped in plastic packing with a label attached. This was then wrapped in brown paper with an address written on. This was tirelessly wrapped again and again with tape.

The buyer - Has just issued a dispute, he has set his feedback to "private" and had 59 transactions this month. He joined not too long ago but already has 2 negative feedbacks this month too...

Myself - I have 100% feedback on 46 transactions buying and selling.

I don't think it is as simple as people say. Why should I just refund him? How do we know he doesn't just have the coat and it was left with a neighbour or something? Then he gets the money and the coat. Do they always 100% get them to sign for stuff? 2 negative feedbacks this month alone leave me feeling a bit cautious.

The negs can only be from selling of course- so are meaningless in this context.

You chose to use recorded, it rarely updates in some areas but the fact you have used it strengthens the buyers case as he can point categorically to the tracking and show it has not been delivered. You can drive yourself mad as long as you like with wondering whether coat has bebeen delivered or not- but it makes no difference.

Unless that recorded number shows as delivered before ebay/paypal close the dispute you *will lose, no ifs or buts about it, you will lose. If you refuse to refund and ebay close the case on you, then your seller dashboard is at risk as you get a strike. You also face a neg from buyer of course as most buyers will leave poor feedback if forced through a dispute. The money will be removed from your paypal account (it will already be on hold) if that gives you a negative balance then paypal will hunt you down for it.
