My book that arrived yesterday also had an outer 'coat' of brown parcel tape. All that happened is that something has caught and lifted an edge and all the parcel tape with it- torn half the back of the wrapping off leaving brown tape with jagged edges that have now stuck to the book.

If there was a return address (and that is usual on Amazon) then it has been destroyed entirely. My address on the front of the book has been lifted but as it was covered in clear tape it is still readable although it wouldn't have taken much more to have lost that as well.

It arrived in a plastic bag with an RM apology that item was damaged en route.

i've had 4 items in the last 4 years arrive in RM bags apologising to damage of original packaging....all of which were the dreaded brown paper. all had some cellotape around them.

I never use the stuff. Always jiffy envelopes or blue mailing bags.

Update is I have explained the full claiming process to the buyer and he is now more than happy to wait until the 22nd for his money on the basis that the RM have not yet considered the item lost. He apologised for his wife taking it to claim and has stated he will leave positive feedback as we have been communicating well. So good news for now, now to see if coat turns up.

All of which suggests that your initial reaction - that it was a scam/con - were unfounded. It seems likely that you both thought each other was a scammer and both over-reacted.
  • It never showed up so I have issued a full refund. Hope I get the cash back from the RM but not holding my breath.
