I knew it was scam from the email you got after. I don't know why - they always email to check their scam is going through ok.

The usual suspects said they just wanted to know when it would arrive safely. I've been on Ebay 13 years - and know as suspicious email when i see one.

So it seems I was lucky with mine then - exactly the same modus operandi, same email, same item and yet mine was paid for in full via paypal with no chargeback
  • Hi
Provided the transaction has appeared in your PayPal account then you really need to treat the buyer as genuine!

Send recorded delivery and trackable if poss.

Recorded delivery shouldn't even be considered for something valued at £200 and "trackable if poss" should read trackable for definite.

For something of that value, only Special delivery of a courier service that had adequate insurance cover and online tracking should be used.

Perhaps in your case, if a stolen credit card was used, the fraudulent activity wasn't noticed until after the 120 day limit for doing a chargeback?

Just to update you - I received an email today from Paypal advising me that
"Because you followed the guidelines of the Seller Protection Policy,
though, PayPal will cover the amount of the chargeback. "

The money was released back to me and I have now withdrawn it before they change their minds!

My faith in their procedures has been renewed.

And it only took 15 days to settle

Hi, I think I am being hit by the same scam. Sold a ps3 BIN to a buyer with zero feedback who just joined that day. He payed immediately by PayPal, and then an hour later got the message saying '' when will it arrive, send it recorded for security this is a high value item,do not send invoice as its a birthday present.''
I have not sent the item yet. But was wondering what is the best way of dealing with this. If I send it I will use a trackable courier with added insurance, but to be honest I don't want to send it as it has all the hallmarks of this common scam. I don't know whether cancelling the transaction would be the best move. I would appreciate any advice, thanks
  • Hi

Sorry to hear that you have been hit by the same scam. I would also be interested to hear what other people advise you to do, now that it does appear to be a scam and not some poor little new buyer who is just starting out etc etc.

I posted mine using TNT courier, fully tracked and with extra insurance to cover the full value of the item. It took 3 weeks for the chargeback to appear on my Paypal account, Paypal then froze the money relating to the sale (fortunately I had not withdrawn it) and then took 15 days to resolve in my favour.

I'm not too familiar with all the rules and regs regarding cancelling the sale - I thought that the buyer had to agree to the cancellation so that you could get your FVFs back?

Perhaps someone with more experience could advise you soon.

Whereabouts is your buyer based? Mine was in the Midlands.
  • Also, just a thought, but it might be worth your while starting a new thread about this scam highlighting that it is a PS3 scam as you may get more response from people on here

Cancel it and re-list! What a shame, another nail on the coffin of ebay...
