  • Just doing a full scan on avast but coming onto this site to add this comment does not give me faith the problem has gone. Scan has been running well over an hour now and 30% completed. Could it be to do with available ram as previous poster suggested?

Throwing RAM at it may well improve things but it won't solve the underlying problem if the laptop runs OK for an hour so before slowing.

your earlier post suggest 2GB of ram is installed, and your commit charge is low? If so, ram shouldn't be a problem.

Firefox plugin does tend to go into runaway mode sometimes, which is why i suggested trying IE (which needs updating to IE8 using the link above). if you have many firefox add-ins, they can also be problematic, they don't show up in hijackthis logs unfortunately

A full virus scan will take a while.

Google toolbar/update has appeared, possibly as a result of the bundled chrome/avast install, if you don't need it, uninstall it, and delete the google update task in c:\windows\tasks

There's a system mechanic service running, speedup utilities rarely have a speedup effect, and when they load at startup sometimes the reverse

tick and fix these using hijackthis
