£5 back shopping at local shops with AMEX

  • Obviously it depends on the deal that the shop has negotiated but the person behind the counter won't have a clue - Amex have reduced everybody's fees so for me it is cheaper to take an Amex card (1.5%) than a MasterCard (1.55%) now!

So why do some shops give such stink about taking it? A lot of times it was the owner behind the counter who was moaning. One guy said it costs them £3 to take £5 on an amex although I don't believe that could be true. Another guy, who was def the owner, said amex takes longer to pay out.

I'd really like to know why people are so reluctant and sometimes quite annoyed by people using an amex in a small shop, if the percentage is roughly the same as other cards. Is an extra few pence charge for them really that big a deal?

I have no idea - perhaps they haven't kept up to date with the changes made in the last year or two? I cannot see how it'd cost £3 to take a £5 Amex payment so I think that's artistic licence to try and put you off.

They've done the same thing in the US for the last 3 yeas.

Thanks, I shall keep my notes then. It should be a lot quicker if I can go round the stores without having to make a list of stores from the website next time.
  • In the US, isn't it only on for 1 day a year, and something like spend $10 get $5 back?

I managed 111 purchases and my partner another 50 or so, fair bit of food, beer, various kitchen bits, some tat, a few mags and enough greetings cards to last a few years!

My 111 purchases were probably from around 30(ish) shops. Probably more than half of the (listed) shops I tried refused Amex, many wanted a minimum spend of £10. Most, (but not all) were really overpriced, and my worst purchases were Lindor chocolates from Brewer St News (shame on you!!) the chocolates were disgusting, they'd melted (no doubt in the summer) and reformed into pieces of..

While I may have gotten £555 back, my renewal falls due this month, so Amex will claw £450 back, £150 up on last year, but hey, for that £150 they sent me a birthday card this year. I was going to cancel, but with all these promotions, and the 4 cards I have on the account, I may be better off keeping it.

Enjoyed the promotion, but cannot see it returning in the same form. The other offers have been great, West End Vip day, Xbox and Foursquare, I [STRIKE]practically [/STRIKE]got my Xbox for free just to [STRIKE]take advantage of [/STRIKE] (benifit from) the other offers there :)

Did anyone have any luck chasing down missing credits on their Lloyds TSB avios amex card? So far I have tried phoning Lloyds and waited in a long queue to get through only for them to tell me that they dont have access to amex promotions and they need to speak to amex. Lloyds tried to phone but then hit the amex queue - all the time the phone is ticking on the 0845 number.

I am going to give up phoning as a bad job and write a letter of complaint to Lloyds, since they are my credict card provider and I hold them responsible for sorting it out with Amex.

    I now it's only £5 but it's the principle.

The whole point of these promotions is to encourage loyalty to amex, so far they've simply managed to p*** me off!

I'd write to Amex not Lloyds since that is who the contract is with. Anyway, let us know how you get on.

My partner has a lloyds amex and has been refunded several missing £5 credits by emailing [EMAIL="registeredcardsupport@aexp.com"]registeredcardsupport@aexp.com[/EMAIL].

I've had a partial answer to my own missing lloyds amex credits but my correspondence over the said email address has dried up over the Christmas period, hopefully they'll get their act together after the bank holiday.

You won't need to give any card details if you email from the address you registered for the £5 promotion.
