£5 back shopping at local shops with AMEX

Anyone manage to do better than 234 stores? Most of the cashback has now come in so I'm very happy with this.0

What struck me was that she clearly was happier not making the sale than to make a £4 amex sale with £1 card charge. How expensive must amex be where a £1(25%) payment charge does not cover the costs?
Obviously it depends on the deal that the shop has negotiated but the person behind the counter won't have a clue - Amex have reduced everybody's fees so for me it is cheaper to take an Amex card (1.5%) than a MasterCard (1.55%) now!0 -
Well I managed just one shop - I don't see the point of amassing lots of goods, even cheap or for free, that I just don't want and will never use.
And I did find the search facility for shops truly appalling - I might have found a few more had it been more user friendly.0 -

:rotfl:!!!! I doubt it!
I ran out of useful things to buy even with 100s of shops nearby in London - but I didn't have much time to throw at it really.
There's also a lot of overpriced rubbish and I didn't want to end up with too much stuff even if it was effectively free - e.g. The Paddington Bear Shop and a mug for £5.99. Would I have bought one for 99p without the deal? Probably not!
The biggest wins were things I would have bought anyway like local shops and restaurants we already used (splitting the restaurant bill across 2 cards on the same account), fish and chips, take aways, restaurants, local pubs etc. Also great for xmas stamps from newsagents
Hopefully next year, they'll have a website that doesn't look and perform like a student's first project0 -
I've got a lot of wine, chocolate, cashew nuts, greetings cards, and presents for children, but it will all get used sooner or later.0

I think it's wishful thinking that this promotion will be an annual occurrence. It has surely cost AMEX a lot of money (and with all their other promotions too).
I was pretty pleased with £70 cash back and can't really see how they will get that marketing investment back from my future spending in small shops as a cardholder. But looking at this thread, £70 seems small fry! A lot of you have received nearer a grand back (congrats!).
I'm no marketeer but surely cost of customer acquisition is too high for this to be run again... I'd like to be proved wrong though!0 -

They've done the same thing in the US for the last 3 yeas.0 -

I had a few butchers and organic fruit and veg stores near me so managed to stock up on a few days worth of meat and veg0 -
I think we are in the minority. Most people I know that have an Amex, didn't even know it was running, and I'm sure that many of those people that did know, didn't make a special effort to seek out places to utilise the promotion0

True, I only found out about it from this forum, not from any communication that my credit card company sent me.0
