Unfrtunately it is one of the many directory enquiry services so instead of the 1p call that you were expecting you end up paying 49p and 9 p per minute!
I have had it once and the cost of the call was enough to make sure I didn't do it again
However, if you look at Martin's thread on the Orchid dialer you can pre programme in the numbers you need to dial. 10% discount for MSE users!0 -
First time user of this site so forgive any mistakes!
As a current BT Together Options 3 user I'd be happy to get my telephone bills down. I have tried registering with call 18866 but the site doesn't allow enough room for my 16 digit Visa number (Nationwide) and requests the last three digits of the security code. Since my security code consists of only three digits it would seem a bit daft to give it. Seems I can't use this service. Pity - unless anyone has any bright ideas??
Am I alone in experiencing this problem? Anyone else with a Nationwide credit card using this- if so, am I doing something wrong?
I think this has been covered before but do you need to dial the area code each time even for local calls with this service?0 -
All credit and debit cards have 16-digit numbers. Enter yours without any spaces - then there'll be room.Dinah_Gale wrote:First time user of this site so forgive any mistakes!

My newest credit card has 7 digits on the signature strip - a group of 4 followed by a group of 3.
Yes, dial the full STD code even for your local calls.
Most importantly (after you've successfully registered), get onto BT and tell them you want to downgrade to BT Together Option 1 immediately.30 years, 217 days!0 -

Why not program a memory button with 18866?0 -

Anyway, regarding phones, have you checked out skype.com?
Anyone reading this is using a computer and may also have broadband, a set of speakers, a soundcard and a microphone. If yes to all of these then check out www.skype.com. Not only can you "skype" another skype user free (if they are near their PC) but you can also "skype out" - this means call a phone or a mobile from your computer. It's a fraction of the cost of BT or NTL and even beats some of the recommendations in this discussion.
Best Wishes and continued success to you,

P.S. I don't have shares in Skype or work for them!
But 1899 has a VOIP service that connects you to landlines for free! click on the link below

Why isn't every phone user doing this?
Phone line from BT - £10.50 (cheapest one)
Sign up to OneTel (free weekend calls and free Directory Enquiries) - NO FEE
Sign up online to https://www.18866.co.uk - Free calls all the time to landlines (1p connection fee - that is all)
18866 - also has the cheapest rates in the UK for mobile calls.
My phone bill used to be about £80 - £90 a quarter.
It is now about £40 a quarter.
It takes an hour and the intelligence to remember the 18866 access code.
You have been told! : :A0 -
i cant login to my 18866 account tonight, anyone else found this or is it just me?thanks to everyone who has thanked me!0

I am a bit concerned because since switching phone supplier from BT to NTL, I'm having huge difficulty using 1899, with many calls not getting connected and having to resort to using the NTL line for calls. I only switched to NTL for the Digital TV, Broadband and line rental for £30 a month. I do get through sometimes but it is very erratic unlike when I was with BT. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Is there anything I can do? 1899 are not answering my complaints. Thanks0

Had a bad day - so decided to have a bit of light relief and sat down to open an account with 18866 - as intended for a few days now. Totally painless - having followed earlier advice to input the mobile number first - and received a confirmatory Email in minutes that the account was active.
So, to the first (cheap) call - to Orchid to order a dialler? Only to have a disembodied intercept from BT " There is not a fault. To regain access to indirect telephone service providers you must cease your membership of either the Light User Scheme or Incontact Plus. Ring BT free on etc etc .."
Bit puzzled by this, as I am on BT Option 1 (the £10.50 monthly and on which all the 18866 price comparisons have been based). Went on to the BT site - input my number to their checking package - and recived confirmation (as their recent bill) they also believe I am on BT Option 1? Did a bit of digging in the finer print of Terms and Conditions (the bad day now getting worse) to unearth a portion to the effect "BT Together options are not applicable to some lines and services, e.g. non-BT lines, ISDN lines, Service Provider Calls and Access"
I don't think 'Service Provider Calls' relate , in this context, to services such as provided by 18866? But why, then, is there a hard interrupt (I can't get past it - it aborts the call - and I have tried several times) on my 18866 calls? I can comprehend (but have seen nothing in these threads) that the terms for eg 'Incontact Plus' are at odds with using an alternate carrier. But find it hard to swallow that BT Billing and BT Online have me as Option 1 whereas the BT phone system effectively regards me as Light User / Incontact !!
Before I ring BT - would appreciate any illumination /related experience, please. Have read the related threads - and apologise if I have missed something similar. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Sorry Mike I can't say I have heard of this before. Obviously if you were with the Light User Scheme you wouldn't be able to use 18866 but you should be allowed to use it with Option1.
The only thing I can suggest is perhaps the number at one time was on the Light User Scheme?
edited to add, do you have an alarm connected to BT?0
