If Apple werent offering replacements I would say that its just bad luck, but as they are offering replacements, I expect the same from Comet.

    That is a fair point.

But Comet would need to put pressure on Apple, they couldn't do it unilaterally, would cost them a fortune.

If Apple refuse the resellers the the buyers will be on to plumbs, but I imagine Apple will sort this out or alternatively you should approach Apple direct with proof of purchase.

I'm in the same position as you. I went to comet yesterday, certainly not spoiling for a fight but to see what they can do. Actually spoke to the manager and let's just say he played the brick wall routine. In fact he actually went as far as saying he would be sacked if he offered any kind of exchange.
The fact that the kit has been upgraded is not an issue in itself. What is in my opinion is the fact that if apple are providing exchanges, the retailers should at least be trying to do the same. Otherwise what is the incentive to continue shopping at comet.
Like you I had bought many things from comet in last couple of years, including previous ipad and had intended to buy further things in next few months - when I pointed this out to the manager, he said it was irrelevant.
I guess the end result is the amount of apple stores etc will grow and the likes of comet will soon close and the choice won't exist anyway.
Then all we'll hear is more tales of the death of the high street etc, when in fact it's failure of them to move with the times.
Let me know how you get on, but don't hold your breath.

You wouldn't see Comet or any other retailer giving away free exchanges to customers with no guarantees that Apple will compensate them as a possible situation which could cause financial problems to retailers? Surely that is more likely to cause more retailers to close then bending over backwards to keep customers sweet when they've been shafted quite nicely by the manufacturer.
  • To be honest im quite surprised Apple are even replacing them in the first place so with this in mind, I don't think that they will have much choice but the allow the retailers to do the same.

It mite not happen straight away but imagine the amount of complaints they will receive, not going to be pretty. They should of just waited until next year.

There is a treating customers fairly code of conduct that they will need to follow.

    But we will see...

  • I bought my iPad3 from John Lewis 12 days ago. Hoping that they will allow me to swap as their returns policy seems a bit more flexible?

    whats wrong with it?
  • Not really on topic but thank you OP for posting this, I was planning on ordering the Ipad 3 on Wednesday for my OH xmas present till I saw your post, I would have had no idea the new one was about to be released. I pre Ordered the 32gb Ipad 4th gen this morning from apple. Can't wait to see his face, he thinks I have already bought all the presents so will never think I have got him this.
  • I bought 'The New iPad' (Now known as 3rd Gen) at the begining of October, about 3 weeks later the 4th Gen was announced which obviously left me not too impressed!

I phoned up Apple and explained I wouldn't of bought the iPad if I knew they were about to release a new model and I know they don't announce release dates, but as the previous iPads have all been around the same time of year I thought it was a safe purchase!

I pointed out it wasn't the speed increase that would of made me wait for the 4th Gen, it was because I have also just got an iPhone 5 with the lightning connector, so having my iPad still use the old dock connector would be quite annoying.

Eventually after the woman I was talking to went off for a bit to check with a manager/supervisor they agreed to make an exception to their 14 day returns policy and have since picked up my 'old' iPad and I'll be getting a shiny new 4th Gen any day now!

    So worth a phone call!

Oh dear OP, in light of today's 'news' I do hope your ipad 3 isn't still in Comet's stockroom and your money still in their bank.

I wouldn't want £400-500 worth of kit on pre-order with comet ATM.
