'insufficient band width' - bbc i-player

The above msg has just come up partway through an Antiques Roadtrip prog.

Did the band width test: results 1989 / 1949 / 282 / don't have HD, so Nil in last column.

Tried another programme, same result.

Any tv watching I do is via computer as set hasn't worked since digital changeover date, despite many attempts.

What can I do about 'insufficient band width' please? It's never shown up before.

Earlier this evening I did a CC cleaner run, which I add in case it's relevant.

Thankyou for any help.

reboot your router (ie switch is off for 30 seconds, then back on), check your up/down connection speeds on the router config page before and after.

ccleaner wont speed up your broadband, or anything.

Sorting out your aerial may be prudent, assuming that you have rescanned freeview.

It depends on several factors. Some ISP's limit bandwidth at various times of the day and depending on the package you have.

You also need to bear in mind that your connection is a shared one ( its called a contention ratio ). Basically it depends how many other people in your area are online downloading at the same time. The more there are, the less bandwidth is available.

There could also be an issue with the ISP, or the connection somewhere along the line. The site you are connecting to might be having problems at that particular time.

Your ISP can check your connection and identify a variety of issues and are probably better placed to advise.

    Why doesn't your TV work?
Do you have a TV with a digital tuner? If it's an old analogue set, it won't work.
Freeview boxes start at about a tenner.
2MBps is just about on the cusp for adequate iPlayer streaming, if that's all your line can support there's nothing much you can do.

In the iPlayer settings menu on your PC, make sure that the options are set for Standard Definition, not High Definition

    Check your connection here

No elektra - nothing works and I watch little anyway, but DO like iplayer catch-up for antique-y things, some drama, comedy.
Love the Wireless:D, so I've become used to watching from bed with putah screen turned round.
Just in, so shall make concerted effort after some dump runs with garden waste demain.

Thankyou Dave - I cannot find this standard/high definition choice. The only settings box I have is labelled 'adobe flash player'. It is match box sized and has 5 clickable options-
    1. enable hardware acceleration.
    2. allow/remember/deny bbc access to my camera and microphone
    3. local storage availability. Of 100kb, only 6 kb used.
    4. default micrphone.
    5. quick cam orbit sphere[that's my skype camera]

    Connection speed is 1901 kbps.
Next line is a red bar, presumably because it says it is HDTV, needing 3500.
    then green, TV 1500
    then green, TV 800
    then green, TV 500.
    then green, radio 128.

    download speed - 1953
    Streaming speed 1 - 1950
    Streaming speed 2 - 1982
    Streaming speed 3 - 1773

    Does this explain anything?

If you scroll down below more options, just above BBC you should see lower bandwidth

    Hello Santer,
I've done this again but there is no ref. to 'more options' anywhere.
The connection speed is now 1908; little change to the others.
