Well done dauphin - what a fantastic deal. Just to clarify, did you do the running and phoning or did you wait for Dell to sort it out for you? I've been waiting for my call but not a sausage as yet!

The original 1150 spec I ordered with wireless and dvd/cdrw came to £522. Did you have to pay more than this?

After I heard nothing last week, I sent an complaint email to Dell on Sunday - not sure if the phone call I got on Monday was the result of this, as I have never had a formal reply to it. Having established this point of contact with a sales adviser I was able to reach him by email and phone to finalise the deal.

My original spec cost £480.59 and I am getting the new machine for the same price. The only point I had to argue about was the memory and even that was just a matter of quoting Dell's T&Cs. After that, the guy said he would have to refer this to his manager and would call me straight back - which he duly did with everything agreed. Dell were certainly slow in getting the ball rolling, but ultimately they have behaved very responsibly towards me.

Thanks dauphin - I've already complained but only received an email in reply. I'll email them again.

Sounds like you got a great deal! im still waiting on my phonecall! Any tips on how to get the best deal when it eventually happens? Also any tips for a successful complaint?

I don't think there was anything special in the complaint and I suspect this is not what prompted the first call I received.
As regards the deal I got, really I did not have to push for it at all except over the memory as I described above. As to the rest of the deal, the sales agent stated right up front that they proposed to supply a 2200 in place of the 1150, whereupon I asked him to take me point by point through the main features of the old and new specs.

BTW, I just noticed that what I received this time is an order acknowledgement rather than an order confirmation, but it states that subject to securing payment, and at my request, an order confirmation will be despatched. I have now sent off such a request for a full confirmation and am just hoping it will be forthcoming.
  • Can you post the full spec here, so we know what you've got. When/If they phone we can see if they are trying it on
    Cheers

Update **** I have just sent a complaint email to them, am hoping I get the same response as dauphin.
    Fingers crossed.

    Great, dauphin!

Bet you can't wait till the end of the month now. I've just joined Frugal_Moose in sending yet another email to customer care as yet another day has passed without any call from Dell.

I have now received the actual order confirmation for the agreed spec. It states delivery expected 30 April , but when I go to the online order confirmation it shows my machine at the pre-production stage, estimated delivery date 19 May - a case of deja vu I fear, but this machine will definitely be worth waiting for. Surely they won't run out of cdrw drives again??

any chance of the full spec rundown, sounds like you've got a fantastic deal!! :)
  • Thanks to this thread I too ordered a 5160, and sadly one of my main drivers for buying a new laptop is the need for a CDRW. I've received the emails saying that the CDRW is not available, and have been offered my order to be reset with a DVD ROM. Obviously this is no good for me. Surely though they will be getting some more CDRWs in stock at some point?? I also notice a new thread on Dell laptops - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=46743 - that mentions CDRW in the spec - how can this be if we can't have one??
