    Hi
Have just signed up to site so am a money saving virgin!

Hubby and I are thinking of claiming bank charges back but I'm concerned with what I've read. We've run a £10k overdraft with Nat West for years and the total bank charges will be considerable. I think we've kept them in business! But if they pull the plug on it we will be stuffed as we couldn't possibly repay it immediately.

    Any advice?

All banks can and some do close accounts/withdraw overdrafts but if you make a claim it could go some way towards paying some of your overdraft.

Probably worth spending the £10 for the info required and then work out what your claim would be. Read up the experiences from NatWest customers.

On the calculator it asks when was the charge, if it is over a period of time
say five years, do you insert the start date of the amount claimed period ?

You enter the charges individually with the date the charge was taken that way the calculator works out that the interest claimable will be more on a charge taken in 2004 than a charge on 2006, if you see what I mean!

If I understand what you mean, do we claim say for 2001,2002 etc., by
adding up the annual charges and then using the calculator which will give me the interest for each individual year.

No. You enter each charge individually, the date, and the amount. Put all your charges in, then when you finish, print out the result (make a few copies)

    Hi question.

Just to save me trawling through loads of posts could someone tell me this.

    1) Is it illegal for the bank to charge you fees (for whatever reason) or do they refund as a goodwill gesture.

    2) How possible would it be for my partner to get statements from the past 10 years or so, in order to tote up what she is owed? Are the banks obliged to provide this info?

    Thanks.

It's unlawful for them to charge anything over their actual costs. These are considered profit making penalties.

They are supposed to hold records for a certain period, so they may not actually have any information going back further.

Again, the statute of limitation should mean claims can only be made for 6 years, however people have claimed for longer periods.

    Hiya,

I have had a rather swift response from Halifax (1st letter only sent on Monday) saying 'they will not refund any charges' and the letter is a tad rude?

Has anyone else had this prob? I sent it to local branch.
