I have shopped in Sainsbury's stores most of my adult life & Sainsbury’sPontypridd is actually my local supermarket at the moment! They’re customerservice staff have only ever been exceptionally helpful for me. :D

Also Pollycat is correct, Sainsbury's website says that it's the 250g Tilda Boil In The Bag rice thats £1, not the 500g box & knowing Sainsbury's failrly well it would have stated this clearly on the red advertising they put on the shelf!!

The above brings tears to my eyes.
  • Well, *retailXpert* I am not claiming that Sainsbury's website priced the product incorrectly, I said the large blazing red special offer sign was incorrectly placed. Therefore misleading.

And to answer another post, I can't stand at the till checking my reciept, I am too busy packing my shopping. Struggling with a trolley and several cloth bags, I then rush to catch the last bus at 6.12pm from Sainsbury's, or I have to walk back to the bus station, and I have a strapped broken toe and would find that difficult. I then have to catch another bus and then another, before I arrive home to prepare a cooked tea for a family of 5, which includes a disabled person. So excuse me if I am not able to stand and correct mistakes Sainsbury's make regarding my purchases, I simply don't have the time, it's Sainsbury's job not to make mistakes, and if they do they should humbly apologise and make amends.

The Sel did not have a gram on it, it simply read :
Tilda Boil in the bag, Pure basmati/ brown rice.

And as the only two products that matched the discription on the shelf were both 500g packets, I picked one up.

I'm sure the labels are usually very specific with their descriptions! I'll be there for my weekend shop tomorrow so I'll have a little nose at the Tilda rice!:o

But surely personal circumstance doesn't factor in checking labels on shelves?!
  • retailXpert ? What retail are you *xpert* of ?
    Sainsbury's maybe!!!!

Always precise specifications, are you kidding ???

The sign might have been correctly repositioned/ modified while I was kept waiting 31.43 minutes on the phone. But by all means you go and have a nosey.

However, Sainsbury's staff/ managers have corrected their mistakes many times, usually with charm and apologies. I have a pile of the initialed reciepts to prove my point. So thats an end of it retailXpert.

And as for personal info; that was in reply to someone else's comment . However you seem to be taking my complaint personally.

I didn't suggest you should stand at the till checking your receipt instead of packing, I said that I don't leave the store until I've checked my receipt is correct.

In case this isn't clear, I move away from the tills and check the receipt - it takes very little time.

And as you only do enough shopping to carry in several cloth bags on 2 buses home, your receipt isn't likely to be a yard long, is it?

Are you so busy packing that you don't/can't watch the prices as items are scanned?
I pay particular attention to anything that I think is a good deal (and therefore may not come up at the SEL price) - but if you can't multi-task.....

I do agree with you (and said so in my earlier post) that mistakes shouldn't happen, but they do happen - and you know they happen as you said this:.

I always check the SELs very carefully as I have been done this way many times before.

so I can't understand why you make this assumption:
One automatically assume's everything works out correctly at the till until you come to check your reciept,

    It's just a a forum name, in the same way I assumed welshjennyWREN didn't suggest you we're a bird!:rotfl:

I'm not taking your complaint personally, but your story does seem to be a little muddled & as another user pointed out you have contradicted yourself several times!

Well, if you don't check your receipt how can you be sure this doesn't happen on a regular basis? I pack my bags, pay, push the trolley up to the wall at the rear of the check out, take approximately 30 seconds to scan down my receipt and that's it, job done. (It really does take only thirty seconds if you've been keeping half an eye on what you've been picking up.) Nine out of ten times it's fine, the tenth time I have to go along to the CS desk where they're inevitably perfectly okay about it and get things sorted in a few minutes. I shop mostly at Tesco sometimes Sainsburys and I can honestly say I haven't noticed a jot of difference between the two except of course you get double the difference back at Tesco.

I'd never waste time or money complaining by phone tbh, it's inevitable the CS staff will want to deal with the customers standing in front of them first, it's much easier to leave the phone lying on a desk. If I didn't have time to complain on the way out of the store I'd take my receipt and packet in next time, or more likely just forget about it if it was only a few pence. I do generally leave myself enough time to check my shopping though!

Incidentally in 2011 I did keep a very rough running total of how much Tesco could have overcharged me if I'd not checked things. They didn't get off to a good start by overcharging me £15 on a ham in January but the rest of the dribs and drabs certainly added up and it was over £100 by the end of the year, including a second large mistake. DtD meant I came out of it with £100 "profit" so it certainly pays to check.

The other question of course is what do I do if I find they've undercharged me? Well, excluding things like the 1p glitches and such it hardly ever happens which is an interesting fact in itself. I think it's just the nature of the errors, the computer gets the updated prices but the bloke changing the SELs hasn't quite managed to keep up for example and as prices are more likely to go up than down, you get more overcharges compared to the SEL due to this. And the main source of overcharges I find are when they've forgotten to take a promo SEL down at the end of the promotion, it's rarer to find they've forgotten to put the promo SEL out at the start. Anyhow, what do I do if I find I've been undercharged? Must admit here I am a very bad and immoral person  and don't bother to tell them about it. I'm sure I miss a few overcharges and I don't bother to go to CS for any overcharges of 5p or less, so I'm sure it works out in the end.

Anyway, moral of tale is to get into a regular habit of checking your receipt before you leave the shop, every time. It only takes seconds and it does save you money. Yes the supermarkets shouldn't get it wrong. How many product lines are in the average big branch of Tesco or Sainsburys? Mistakes happen. That's life. It's up to the individual to watch out for themselves if they don't want to be on the wrong end of these inevitable mistakes, that's all.
    Val.
  • "Struggling with a trolley and several cloth bags"

That's one misunderstanding Pollycat, the trolley is filled with the heavy stuff i.e. sacks of cat litter, glass bottles, tins, several 2.5kg bags of potatoes and other heavy vegetables, frozen packs and joints of meat or chickens. .

As to the poster who claimed I repeatedly contradicted myself, re-read my posts, then point them out to me please.

I'll try and sort out the misunderstanding.

When products have been reduced I have been charged the full price. When products have been on offer I have been charged the full price.
When a stack of the same product has been behind a reduced or offer price, I have been charged a greater price.
One automatically assumes everything works out correctly at the till until you come to check your receipt, often when it's too late, after you've left the store, rushing to get on with a busy life. It's such an absolute money/ time wasting inconvenience, especially when you live 15-20 miles away from the offending store. I always check the SELs very carefully as I have been done this way many times before.

Does sound like all you buy is charged at a higher price!
One should never assume and one should check ones receipt before leaving the store, it takes no time at all to scan even a long receipt (especially as you always seem to be wrongly charged). This way your busy life will not have to waste time & money or be inconvenienced.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • Problem sorted, have just spoken to David Thorington, he quite understood how an offer sign below one product and above another could be misconstrood. He also apologised for David and Alex's unpleasant attitude. He's very generously offered me a £5.00 giftcard when I next go in.

That will certinly smooth my ruffled feathers. :T

Now for a cuppa tea and some of Sainsbury's raspberry ripple cheesecake. :D
