Real-life MMD: Should student daughter contribute?

  • Hi,
I'm a 19 year old girl in my second year at Uni, and I am still living at home with my single parent and pay my mum £50/wk.
I have no part-time work so the money comes solely out of my student loan, and including travel expenses to and from Uni I still managed to save nearly £2.5k last year from my grant and loan.
I don't think that it is selfish to ask your daughter to pay rent, if she moved out then she'd have to pay a lot more so £20/wk is an amazing amount.
So, from someone who has gone, and is going, through the same circumstances as your daughter, you are well within your right as the homeowner to ask for a contribution.
I hope this helps with your dilemma.
  • As the original poster has an alias called "debs" i think we can assume it is a single mum lol!

I think we can assume that you don't understand what these 'Real-life MMDs' are. Debs isn't the parent in question, she's the MSE staffer who's posing the MMD. The question itself will have been sent in anonymously by email and could be from anyone, of either sex, so my point still stands!

She wants her cake and eat it. Sorry but I agree with the majority here - she should most certainly pay for her keep while she is living with you.

Agreed the grant and wage she earns don't go far when she has to buy books and stationery etc but food and heat don't come free for any of us either.

She isn't a child anymore - it is time for her to take on some responsibility and to acknowledge the burdens you carry in order to keep your home running. £20 per week is a minor contribution and seems very fair to me.
