Fathero - yes, after a FULL retune (NOT just add channels) your mother, and everyone else in NI with a FreeviewHD box, should be getting RTE1 and 2 and TG4. Looks like you may be in the same boat as D.A.
D.A. - OK I've actually gone and looked and the RTE channels ARE in fact on their own 'Northern Ireland Mini Multiplex' according to this website

That's a great wee FreeviewHD box, I got one for my granddad. I don't know why you both aren't getting RTE. You should be. First thing I would suggest would be testing your equipment in your neighbours' houses (with a FULL retune) and vice versa, if you have very friendly neighbours. Second thing would be the same thing, but at a friends/family house, and the third thing is to get an aerial man out. 1st 2 things are free...

I bought a freeview hd tv and it picks up saorview and we get the full quota of RTE/TV3 channels.

However, it does not pick up the Freeview broadcast RTE1,RTE2, TNaG.

It seems the new Freeview RTE MUX falls between the range of the two old aerials.

Thats a possibility. The signal on Group A aerials drop off after C37, although it used to be 34 or 35. Check out the graph on the link below. If you have two aerials, the cables will be joined in a diplexer that is suitable for the frequency range in use.

    If anyone wants to read up on aerials, try the link below, its packed with info on the subject;

Does it have a Freeview HD tuner? Rather than a problem with the aerial it sounds more like the tv has a DVB-T tuner and the ability to decode MPEG 4. This means it would get the RTE channels from the south but not from the NIMM.

Did you read the first review on that link?
It would appear that the box has a few problems that might be solved with a firmware update.

I'm a gadget geek, therefore the firmware update was done as soon as the box arrived, since I didn't imagine my parents would know how to do a firmware update from USB. :-)
  • Well my Freeview HD box arrived. It was very easy to set up and I can get either NI region or Saorview. Can't easily switch between them - seems to need a complete re-install to do that - but at least I can get all the RTE channels if I ever need to. Thanks again for all the advice. :-)

You could buy a Saorview box in addition to the Freeview one you already have.
Then you have the best of both worlds, including a full EPG, at all times.

That said, my Humax box picks up Freeview and Saorview and while switching over to a Saorview channel causes the Freeview EPG to disappear, switching back to Freeview the EPG returns fairly quickly.
Does your Asda box behave differently?

Ok. It must be the the strength of signal. Which could be as a result of the aerial.
I have already posted this elsewhere but my C39 signal is less than half of the others and I use a wideband aerial. If I didn't have a variable booster in my setup I wouldn't get the NIMM mux either.

I plan to move my aerial around to see if it helps, as I would like to remove the booster now.

waltsalt, chunter does say 'Freeview HD TV' so hopefully that does mean proper DVB-T2 equipment. jtk174 seems to be eluding that if you're in an area with a strong Saorview signal, it may mean interference with and loss off the NI mini multiplex carrying those channels. Not really a problem of course because you'll be receiving more channels, without restrictions, in HD, on Saorview.

    Hi,

Just wondering of anyone lost their BBC channels after the retune for the switchover?

I retuned Mum In Law's telly - which has Freeview built in - but no BBC TV or Radio is on the Channel list.

She's in sheltered accommodation in Bishop Street in Derry, so it's a shared aerial, and I'm not sure if it's pointing at Limavady or Sheriff's Mountain
