36square - if you tell us the make and model of the equipment you're using, I'm sure we could confirm what everyone is guessing at. Just because your SCREEN is READY for an HD signal, doesn't mean that the TUNER is HD. There's also no such thing as 'Freeview Ready'.0

No. I have a Freeview ready HD TV. If I dwell long enough on the RTE channels I get the message 'video format is not supported'.
I have exactly the same problem! A friend has told me I need an ariel on the roof. Others have told me I need a new box for the TV, they said they are all sold out and there's a waiting list for the new ones coming in.0 -

And you have exactly the same solution as well. What everyone has told you is basically wrong. You don't need a new aerial, and the Freeview HD boxes aren't sold out; it's the Freeview HD boxes which would have been supplied through the Digital Switchover scheme which have run out.
So, what you need to do is to buy yourself a *Freeview HD* box from the likes of Amazon (Tesco probably have them too, but whatever you do, make sure it says Freeview HD!!!!). I posted a link to one earlier on in this thread if I remember.
Freeview really have shot themselves in the foot with their poor choice of naming convention here...0 -

Looks simple enough to me? It's the TV manufacturers who are at fault for abusing the HD Ready/Full HD thing. That should be HD Ready/Full HD Ready as they could both need something extra plugged in.
Beachview - just like 36square, if you tell us the make and model of your equipment, you can get advice from people who aren't trying to sell you something!0 -

Mine's a Hitachi 32" heavily reduced at Argos. I couldn't care less about HD; I just wanted a bigger TV and the hope of receiving RTE. I'd be grateful for your guidance.0 -
In order for you to get RTE, your TV needs to have a Freeview HD tuner.
I had a quick look at Hitachi TV's on the argos site and none of them are Freeview HD, just ordinary Freeview. The 'HD' in the description refers to the screen (not the tuner).0 -

I've got a Toshiba 19DL502B. What sort is that?0 -
The Toshiba 19DL502B is NOT Freeview HD (the "HD-Ready" part of the description refers to the screen), so you will need a separate Freeview HD box to be able to view RTE etc on it.
(it's the same TV as we have in our kitchen)

Many thanks DA. Does that also mean it can't receive ANY channels in HD without a Freeview HD box?
Certainly the picture is noticeably sharper than on my non-HD TV but I'm not sure that it's actually HD.
It certainly isn't as sharp as you see on display screens in the shops so it's a good job I don't actually want that 'extreme' HD0
