Thanks Witless but had to do a whole manual reset of the tv as though it was just 'out of box'. Seems to have fixed it ok. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

I phoned a store in Limavady and they told me they were getting the boxes in and they would arrive today. So I decided to get one of those instead of ordering in Tesco/Asda and having to wait until Tue/Wed for it to arrive in store.

I went to the Limavady store today to get the box, its brand is TV Star. Never heard of that one before but I got it anyway as I've bought a few things from there before. There's no scart leads or anything in the box so I couldn't even get it set up tonight. It was a bit if a disappointment when I took it out of the box, its very cheap looking. Okay I know for that price I'm not going to be getting the likes of Sony or something, but there's cheap and there's cheap. The website for TV Star doesn't work and there's no customer service number in the leaflet.

The plug wasn't even made for the UK, it had 2 prongs and there was some kind of converter plug with it, that I had to open, click the 2 pronged part into, and screw it closed.

Now I wish I had just ordered the Technika one in Tesco. I think I'll call into Tesco tomorrow morning and see how soon it'll arrive. The other one is going back.

36square, you gave me a make and size, but not a model. I'm sure Hitachi have made loads of 32 inch TVs over the years. Just by the size, it's unlikely that there's a FreeviewHD tuner in there. If your TV is 'HD Ready', then if you plug a FreeviewHD tuner in, you WILL be able to receive and display HD pictures. If it's HD ready that means at least 720 lines of information, compared to 500+ for SD broadcasts, and 1080 for 'Full HD'. You are NOT watching HD at the moment.
Bigger TVs get the premium features first generally then they filter down, so the smaller the TV, the less likely you are to get an HD tuner, even for new TVs in shops today.
gpduffy - no - if you weren't receiving the 4 southern channels in good quality (no snow or shadowing) I don't think that will be worth it.

    I previously have mentioned aerials in several posts after some people expressed issues picking up the RTE mux from Black Mountain. The Digital UK site actually recommends a Group A aerial, but I was aware that the spec did not actually cover C39 ( especially older models ), so I wrote to them. The following is the important part of their response and hope that it helps someone ( I actually don't have a problem ) ;

Thank you for your patience whilst I have been investigating possible solutions to your particular problem in receiving the RTE channels from the Black Mountain relay transmitter.

You are correct in saying that the performance of Group A aerials drops off quite quickly on channels higher than 37, but in practice the reduction is still within acceptable limits for the majority of aerials at channel 39 which is why we say an existing Group A aerial should suffice in most cases.

Digital UK recommends that viewers wait and see if their existing aerials will be ok before spending money on upgrading, and that it's always best to get advice from a reputable installer.
If you are having difficulty receiving the Irish services on UHF channel 39, this may be for several reasons:

You may have an old type Group A aerial (installed prior to the introduction of analogue Channel 5) which had a smaller channel range and did not include channel 37. A new aerial would resolve this.

If you have a newer type Group A aerial, it may be in poor condition and not performing as it should. A new aerial would resolve this.

There could be something in your aerial installation which is not passing these channels properly.
You may at this point want to consider consulting a reputable local aerial installer for advice and that may incur a cost.
  • My Technika box is supposed to be arriving at Tesco tomorrow...
  • I was hoping for some advice.
My parents have attempted to get rte through their hd ready but not hd freeview tv's. One tv is connected to an rte aerial that preiously got analogue rte and the other isn't. They went to a local electric store to be told that they would need a new aerial and they gave them the number of their installer. he came out and checked and connected the following box to their tv that was connected to analogue rte and tuned it in. they now receive rte 1,2 and tg4 but not tv3. this is the box:

The problem is the tv guide for rte 1,2 and tg4 is not in english but the rest of the stations including hd stations are. I connected the box to the other tv and have the same problem in terms of no tv 3 and tv guide is goobledigooks. I expected no tv 3 on the second tv as it is connected to aerial pointing north but can't understand why the first tv is playing up.

    Downpatrick direction by the way.

    Any advice.

    Thanks

The box is 'Russia and Ukraine' so the gooblegook may be that ?

The reason you don't get TV3 from the other aerial is because you are picking up the Northern Ireland Mini Mux from Black Mountain that only supplies RTE1 / 2 and TG4.
On the other TV with the South facing aerial, you are picking up Saorview broadcasts.
    This is as expected.

I cannot tell you why the EPG is not in English and can only suggest you contact your supplier, or try posting several actual examples of what appears in the EPG ( give the date and time also ). Perhaps someone will be able to help.
