Fantastic news!
Went out today and purchased a Technika Freeview HD set top box, model STBHDIS2010 along with a HDMI lead. The freeview box automatically tuned in all the channels and........
for the first time ever I have RTE 1 and 2 and TG4!!!!!!!
(Im in Newtownabbey area), never had these before!!!
Now, here is another 2 question!!
1. I have connected an ethernet lead from my talk talk router to the back of my freeview hd box, but nothing is happening (am i suppose to be accessing bbc iplayer etc). Does anyone know how this happens???
2. Also, my mum and dad do not have an outside aerial connected to their panasonic flat screen tv (just an indoor areial, but they can watch freeview okay inbuilt on the tv). If I get them a freeview hd box and connect it to their tv will they get RTE too??
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thank you for helping me peeps!!:beer:Groceries challenge

To the 2 questions:
1. I don't that set-top box to answer in detail, or even whether it is meant to have iPlayer included, but there is another forum out there indicating that the trusty old "switch it off and back on again might work"! Type "does STBHDIS2010 have iplayer" into Google and you should see a thread via digital spy at the top of the results.
2. Touch and go. Digital/HD can require a better aerial than analogue. Why don't you try taking your shiny new box up to your parents (if they are near enough), plugging it/re-tuning in and seeing what happens? If it works, great, get another one. If it doesn't, they'll need to consider aerial upgrade.0 -
I think you hit the nail on the head and have made an important distincton.
Your TV may well be capable of displaying an HD picture but you need to have a box or tv that supports MPEG4. This is the protocol being used for the NI RTE mux and the Freeview High Def channels.
However boxes listed as being Freeview HD are capable of playing content broadcast in either MPEG2 OR MPEG4.
.
Thats not really the full story, I bought a telly from Lidl which was mpeg4 and expected to get the rte mux, but was thwarted on DSO, only to discover that it needs to be mpeg4 dvb T2 and not dvb T.
I think mine will get saorview, but i need to put up another aerial.0 -
And to make the same point again, when steveymp talks about 'getting Soarview' of course, just buying the box won't fix anything. He'd need an aerial pointing at a different transmitter. He knows this...
Actually only have 1 aerial but because Sheriffs Mountain (BBC) and Holywell hill (RTE) are so close together, and in line of sight with my house, the one aerial will pick up both quite happily :T
Having said that I may have to put up another external aerial towards Limavady to get full freeviewrather than the current light version we get from Sheriffs mountain.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
I've a Freeview HD box ordered - a great bargain on Asda Direct if anyone else is looking for one - but am not sure if the TV also needs to be HD ready to receive Saorview. Can anyone advise?0

The full story is in the table that is linked in my post above.
The NIMM is DVB-T2 + MPEG4.
However, Saorview digital is in DVB-T + MPEG2.
Unfortunately, people are being confused by the fact that their TV is HD. This refers to the resolution capability of the TV and has nothing to do with the broadcast protocols being used.0 -
tv will not have to be hd ready to receive rte .My old tv is not hd ready but pick up all rte with soarview box0

I have a detailed post on one of the other switchover threads, about confusion surrounding the use of "HD" and also getting a few RTE channels from a transmitter in the North, as compared to getting Saorview from the South.

Where you able to receive the analogue RTE signal prior to DSO?0 -
gpduffy. Good right - try this - do a full retune on your Freeview HD box connected to each aerial and see what channels you get each time. There haven't been any changes to the type of aerial that you need, and certainly not the direction.
Of course since you have 2 aerials, it would follow that you could buy a SoarviewHD box to connect to the one pointing south, but best to check (with your FreeviewHD box) that you can get the signal first. A weak analogue sigal probably means you're not close enough.
crusty toenail - you need to go into the menu system of the box and make sure the network is working OK, then find iPlayer and everything in there too. Have a look at your manual. This stuff is very new though.
2. Yes. If they're getting all the Freeview channels through that aerial, it must be getting a good enough signal, so the FreeviewHD box will work too.0 -
Yes, I got all the RTE channels via my normal aerial and a booster prior to DSO. I also got Freeview though my ITV Digital box hasn't worked for a while. I'm not a big TV watcher and would happily live without it, but have regular family visitors who are so I want to have things set up before they're next with me in a week or so.
Thanks for the link to the other thread - there seem to be a lot of them on this subject.
Thank you too rexel.0
