    Xmas Saver!
Hope you don't mind a stalker, - i've just started a DMP, I've got no idea how long its going to be, the plan said 13yrs if all interest stopped, doubt that!! so like you plodding along.

As for Christmas etc it just means being a bit more rescoucreful, -

Do a list of who you buy for then 1st cut, the people u buy for sake of you've always brought.
Then relatives - say we're just going to do children this yr
Look at home made - mini hampers
Sales - see what is about and when - jazz the items up,

eg - Amazon - get 20 plastic gift bags £2.00, they've got so many uses, -
Present lady - box of value wine glasses Wilko - + small bottle wine supermarket, home bargains - 1 wine glass + bottle, bit of curly ribbon, looks posh.

Have you looked at online surveys, or review writing, a lot of people do dooyoo, even if its £20 per month over a year thats £240.

I tend to buy as much as I can in sales - I save loyalty points, and that helps out. Mobile phone on pay + go - top up at Boots 4p back in £1 .

My home situ I live with family, so don't have mortgage etc, so can't comment re bankrutpcy etc. For me my 1st payment to CCCS 1st Oct, - I'm at the start of my yellow brick road journey.

I'm guessing its going to take a couple of months to get use to the new budget, I was in Poundworld yesterday getting bits for DD's party - whereas would have been just chuck it in the basket, I had to think do I need it, same as when been shopping just got on credit card, - now every penny has to be accounted for, literally stalking my online banking account.

Your get there, and your get a lot of support from the thread, xx

 WHY? Are BR and family supposed to spend the next 28 years without Christmas, presents, turkey or chocolates? What is this? jail? She didn't kill anyone!

Financial institutions already have enough money and have made all our lives miserable for years and years while they keep lining the pockets of those who sail in them.   Banks should never, ever, come above your family! :(
    :xmastree:

No, it's not jail. They are simply paying back money they owe.
They borrowed the money, spent the money and now need to pay it back.

Their options are a)bankrupcy b)IVA c)sell the house d)carry on with the DMP.

BR has said that a, b and c are not options for them which means carrying on with the DMP which will mean having less money to spend on Christmas.

Yes, but having less money to spend on Christmas doesn't mean that she cannot "afford" a Christmas at all as was suggested earlier in the thread.

    Blushing Rose,

Mum 2 One's suggestions are great. We've cut back on who we get pressies for and I think some of those on the cut list were glad as they wanted to cut back too but didn't want to be the one to say ;). I think there are some further suggestions for Christmas on the Old-style boards that might be worth a look.

As long as the debts are going down, they're going in the right direction. Keep going!

Hi Blushing I remember you . Nice to see you again, even if the circumstances are not that great.

I am sorry your OH can't see the necessity of selling the house. I take it you have sat down with him, and explained how you could have a fresh start and actually LIVE for the next 28 years, rather than EXISTING? A house is just a thing, it shouldn't be a millstone around your necks.

Can you explain to him that the stress of the debt and the length of time it is going to take to repay, is not helping your depression either?

Is it a family house (ie one that has been his families for generations?). Then I could see the attachment but if not....

What is the likelihood of his income increasing again? Or our own. You mention that the house is his and the debts? Does that mean that the DMP is just in his name or is in both of yours? If you are contributing to paying off debts that aren't in your name (and technically therefore aren't actually your problem), then I think you should have a fair say in how those debts are tackled....

    Hello Rose! I remember you!
now we're looking at 28 years of this if nothing changes.

It will change. That's not me being mystic and prophetic, it's just the way things are. Something will shift: you might get a job, win the lottery, get a lodger, [STRIKE]rob a bank[/STRIKE]...

I'm sorry to hear it's so difficult at the moment, especially about the depression. Are you getting any help for that?

    Thanks for this.
We've already been doing a lot of adjusting with our week to week life, although it could probably still do with some tweaking.

Our budget has changed a bit since we first started, payments to CCCS reduced a couple of times but has been stable until Mr BR's salary drop recently.

You've given me some good ideas re: Christmas.
We do need to do a little list anyway of who we're planning to buy for although it's never been that many, and to a couple of people it's been token pressies anyway so something really cheap, jazzed up, would fit the bill there for sure.
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we've also been keeping an eye out in charity shops through the year for stuff. We also look in The Works, B&M and Home Bargains although I have to admit, I feel a bit of a cheap-skate. However, we don;t have the money to go mental and so it's more thoughtful gifts this year for everyone, or lots of little ones in a box, wrapped up individually.

I have a diary too, if you fancy a real stalk ;)

For the record (and I'm just splitting hairs here) Mr BR borrowed and spent, not me. However, in spite of the fact that we're not married, I'm here, supporting him as best I can but it's taking it's toll on my mental health.

To be honest, if we sold the house, we'd 'only' gain about £120 a month, so it's not like we;d be able to jet off to Paris at a moment's notice ;) Any 'spare' money left over from the sale would have to be put towards another place to live, surely? (Unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious). Plus the house is only just worth more than the mortgage on it, so I'm not sure we'd gain anything.

Unlikely that it'll go back up. It was a temporary increase for a couple of years and we'd forgotten that it was going to go down again at some point. It would have been nice if we'd got a warning letter mind!
It's possible that I might be able to get a job, yes, and of course that would help a great deal. My depression isn't exactly helping there though - hello vicious circle!
The DMP is indeed just in his name, and as I'm currently not working regularly (although I get the odd bit now and then) I'm not really in a position to help financially. However, all decisions are made between us, now.

Robbing a bank!!! Why the Hell didn't I think of that?! :p

We failed to win £80 million the other day on the Euro, which was a shame as that would have come in handy, but to be honest we rarely do the lottery. (perhaps we should start with £1 a week, you've got to be in it to win it!)

I've been getting some counselling re; the depression and anxiety but I don't really feel it's working.
