I used Ocado on the Go app to compare prices again as I went round Sainsbury's on Monday.
Organic rib eye steaks were cheaper in Sainsbury's and organic Weetabix was still 2.69 whereas it's 2.99 in Waitrose ad Ocado. Moo organic UHT milk was 2 for 1.50 on offer as well.
Other than that I was surprised to find the organic stuff I had on order at Ocado was cheaper or same price.0 -
For the products we buy (about 95% own brand mainly from basics and mid range) Sainsbury's is cheapest at the moment for us. A few months ago this wasn't always the case but they have reduced the prices of some staple items we get back to what they were a year ago. The quality of their products is very good too xx0

£600 a month for 3 people?!? Madness!
You could chop half off that, easily. Probably more if you tried.
I'm wondering why you're here actually... Either, you don't actually want/need to save money... or you've just discovered the reason you're in difficulty.Because it's fun to have money!

Personally, we only buy the special offers when we have money off vouchers. We tend to buy everyday items at either Morrisons or Asda. Not only do I find sainsbury's overpriced but i don't think they have a particularly good range of fresh food. I like trying new things (and TRYING to get the kids to try them) and find Morrisons to have a much better range.
Still brings a smile to my lips though when I think of Stephen Fry saying "I love Sainsbury's....it keeps the riff raff out of Waitrose".0 -
I used to buy some of the basics stuff from sainsburys and the odd other item here and there and I didnt find them too expensive, prefer them to tescos. But these days I much prefer aldi and Im lucky in the respect that my town has a few supermarkets, more than a few.
I absolutely prefer aldi to tesco, tesco have really odd pricing policies, their fruit and veg is very expensive and Im on a low income and every penny counts.
But if I didnt like aldi food, I wouldnt be shopping there full stop.0 -
Stephen Fry was repeating something first said by Alan Coren..
It seems to me that Sainsbury's is expanding it's organic non-fresh produce range because I've found tea, couscous, digestive biscuits, oat cakes, olives, mayonnaise..all sorts of stuff.
However if Sainsbury's wants to steal customers from Waitrose, doing the CHAVDA (don't blame me blame Mumsnet) style announcements (especially when ASDA does them better) won't help.
If Lidl did more organic food I'd never set foot in Sainsbos. Lidl is so much cheaper, quirkier and quieter.0 -
I think that if a person is wanting to save money then they are best off going to all the different places and getting the cheapest wherever.Instead of just sticking to one supermarket as some places are cheaper for certain things but not others.Basically you have to pick and choose.
I also think that Home Bargains are reasonable as is Iceland and getting all fruit and veg from the market is cost effective. The other day I got a big bag of peppers for £1.00 and there were about 7 big ones all nice and crisp. These were about 80p each in Sainsburys.
Aldi are very good for cleaning things, like washing up liquid, washing powder, shampoo etc.Their tinned tomatoes are also good.
I think Tesco are good for their everyday value double concentrated cordial which is about 42p and I like their lime flavor soda water 45p.
If you want something a bit different though its usually Sainsburys that will sort you out. Like vanilla pods. They have more specialty stuff.
Also dont forget the continental supermarkets, these are good for a browse, although you do tend to have to get things in large quantities but they tend to be cheaper.
Lidl stocks wierd things like roll mop herrings in jars and will have these next to a special offer on walking socks or big knickers or something.0 -
The rollmops in Lidl are really good dandelionclock30 :T0

LOL, I never knew people actually ate them.I thought it was a urban myth.0

Went to Tescos last week and couldn't believe the price of fruit and veg - it appears to have gone through the roof and half of the Everyday Value items, like peppers and tomatoes, had disappeared. Not even just out of stock, there was no labeling for them either.
I now do all my fruit and veg shopping at Sainsburys. It is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.
Baby stuff in Sainsburys is also better value and better quality - Basics nappies are great. And Tescos baby wipes are also very expensive in comparison to Boots or Sainsburys.
However, other things are very expensive. For example, own branded fusilli pasta and fajita paste are both twice as expensive in Sainsburys than in Tesco. Massive price differences for no good reason.Overpay Mortgage by £9,100 in 2013 - £9,316.16/£9,100
