What I buy is cheaper in Sainsburys.

Tesco recently whacked up the price of the frozen veg I buy to £1.33 a pack! Its still £1 a go in Sainsburys (and just about every other supermarket)

Tesco shrunk the size of the packet ham and chicken to 100g and 85g respectively. In Sainsburys its still hovering around the 120g mark.

Sainsburys has Oyster mushrooms for £1.30 a pack, in Tesco they are £1.49.

    I could go on.....

I think it matters what you buy and also what your store is like. The Tesco stores near me (more then a few!) are normally out of stock, they seem to let products run right down to zero and then remain out-of-stock for a day or so before restocking, this happens regularly.
Sainsburys however seem to have more staff around who seem to smile at me more, managers seem less hostile and less bored and there are far fewer crates in the way when I shop, its as if they actually recognise that shoppers do not need crates to be in the store when they shop! (Sorry, I know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit).

I think Tescos need to reel themselves in a bit, prices have just become too high and too fast. I've a feeling they'll attempt some sort of a crazy price drop before Christmas but the way they've gone about it is just so irritating- they let us know that prices drop so why not warn us that prices are going up? Fairs fair!

jenniewb makes an interesting point about stock control. A few years ago the business press was full of stories about how bad Sainsbury's was in this regard. They were right, it was. But now the boot seems to be on the other foot. I have four Tesco branches in my shopping area and they are all unreliable.

This matters a lot if your time is short and you don't want to have to traipse from store to store looking for items out of stock in your first choice. In fact the wasted fuel and time can easily cost more than the few pence one supermarket can save you over another.

There's a general feeling that Tesco has go too big for its boots. I think this apparent inability to manage its supply chain is (just one) sign of that.,

Sainsburys is most expensive, but i prefer the shopping at sainsburys to tesco/asda/lidl, its less riff raff.

I also agree with the less riff raff in sainsburys, in asda theres alot and i mean alot of riff raff (due to its location) (plus its a big store so more customers to block aisles) in there and on saturdays and possibly sundays you have to queue just to get in the car park, instead of waiting in the queue id prefer to go to sainsburys and get the shopping done and be home. The next closest asda isn't too bad for riff raff.

Tesco isn't too bad for riff raff.

    Oh dear.........!

And here's me thinking that shoppers went to their store of choice for the best deals and prices - not on the status of their clientele!
  • It would be good if you can explain what you describe as riff raff . . .

And I understand that people shop based on prices, the local Asda just isnt somewhere I would shop and thats my choice.

I normally shop in Costco, Lidl, Farmfoods and the local market, but a couple of weeks ago I priced up a typical shop:

    Asda £123.50
    Sainsburys £125.31
    Tesco £132.51

So if I decide to do an online delivery or actually visit a big supermarket for stuff I can't find in my usual places, it'll be Asda for me. It's hideous in the big Asda near us but I just zone out; I don't go there for the pleasant company. I just wish MySupermarket would include Morrison for comparison. Haven't been to Morrison in a while but I remember their meat as being good quality. Costco used to be cheaper than the normal supermarkets for meat, but that's no longer the case - we now only use Costco for Felix (46p/tin compared to 50p Asda, 54p Tesco and 56p Sainsburys), milk and crisps now. We buy 240 tins of Felix a month for our lot, so that's a £9.60/month saving on the next cheapest Asda and a massive £24/month saving on Sainsburys, and Costco always has enough stock that we can get all the Felix in one go in trays of 24. Costco membership pays for itself in the first couple of months each year.
