It's homage now he has had the dreaded PPR again'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

My dad and brother are both builders and both served proper apprenticeships.
My grandfather (my mum's dad) was also a tradesman and did a full apprenticeship. He was a painter and decorator, but did some really specialist work. He could work in gold leaf and was a signwriter. My dad went to work for him, learning painting and decorating before taking up broader general trades. He then went into plumbing and electrics. My brother is a decorator and does some really unusual work. Very high end for wealthy customers with very expensive wallpapers etc.
None of this skill came to me or my husband and my family finds our lack of skill laughable. I can paint ok but my skills with anything else leave a lot to be desired. As for drtifosi, letting anyone who is colour blind loose with the electrics is never a good idea...Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Plastering is a definate art and with it there is no substitute for experience, I have tried it and eventually admitted that I am fine with small areas...BUT...when i see the Plasterers on DIY SOS and similar programmes I just gaze in wonder especially when they attempt and succeed with plastering 'ceilings' with me gravity takes over every time.:(
I find that on the variety of web sites there are numerous clips of most of the trades that we have touched upon showing how many of the DIY jobs are tackled. They wave their float around like a musical directors baton.
I will agree that builders are grossly under-rated.
In the bit of house we had done we 'asked' the plasterer to leave all the corners soft and rounded. He had never done this before and yet the result is astoundingly good. It's not something we can do in the more 'formal' parts of the house were we want it to look half way in between ......so like it might have done originally.....as if someone has tried to make it square and level but with little skill. The plasterer is so skilled we definitely want him back, but how we ask him to make it look as if he is less good than he is I don't know!
This is definitely not a crisp finish house, we are not crisp finish people in this house.0 -
Question for the nice women. I usually hand wash my bras, but recently stuck one through the machine, And now the wires (?) are creaking! Is there any way to rectify this? It's alarmingly loud.....like magnified squeaking of eating haloumi or overcooked turkey....or creaking floorboards..0

lir, I have never handwashed a bra ( that probably answers, though not necessarily, the question of my gender) and the wiring has never squeaked afterwards. What on earth did you do to it!
On the subject of DIY, I decorated a boxroom at Christmas and instead of using wallpaper all the way round, used fabric to cover one wall. It's used as an office and the fabric is a black and white representation of the London skyline, and if I say so myself, rather fabulous! I did wallpaper and paint myself, patched some plaster, but would definitely draw the line at plastering a wall!0 -
I thought she was on about the wires in her washing machine.0
