That's the best way to be. When I was growing up people dressed to show what kind of music they liked which I think narrowed everybody's musical "spectrum".
It was a kind of self-defining fashion accessory. Always much preferred the attitude of John Peel and Jools Holland had/have got the broad-mindedness to listen to a wide range of music to find the best.
Some of the best concerts i've been to were accomanying others to really good concerts in genres I wasn't heavily into - e.g. Dr Hook, joan Armatrading, Simply Red, Eric Clapton and others. I'd recommend that everyone accompany their friends to a concert they wouldn't normally go to and expand their horizons.
Brilliant post!
(exceopt the simply red bit...:p)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
I'm 30. I think it is one of the things that made me know that I had to change my life - realising that I didn't really listen to music any more and that the music that was 'introduced' to me didn't really do anything for me (very formulaic). That and after going to at least a gig a month (and to Glastonbury a few years in a row), I was going to nothing (and the rare occasions I did see a band, they weren't anything that appealed to me).
I have a bit of catching up to do I think.
In a way, I envy you. There's so much good stuff out there to be discovered.
So much music I remember hearing for the first time, & how it moved me.
I don't get people who don't go to gigs...
That is why I'm trying to explore classical music now. I mean, there's so much of that out there, stuff I've heard, but don't know what it is, as well as amazing stuff I'd never imagined, but it is amazing! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Hmm, I'm the same age as you Nikkster, & stuck in a music rut...
I've just gone on youtube now, as you guys are talking about it, & my fingers hovver over the keyboard wondering what to type in the search box as my brain toys with the same half dozen bands I've listened to for years!

Was a great gig. I watched it coz the Argentine crowd are great. Seen the Argies great with GnR too.
But they did a great gig too including some old stuff I could sing along with
I bought all the albums up to black ice (8th i think) but sadly they all got damaged in my loft with the heat and I threw them out as I could get anything from youtube.0 -

Love music.
Though I try very hard, friends have labelled me a music nazi:eek:.
I remember taking a girl out on a first date. In the car she leant forward & turned the stereo down. "What the f*** do you think you're doing?!?!" was my response...:o (I'm very possesive about the stereo when driving...)
I relate to the snobbish thing though. I have it less than I used to. Remember hearing James for the first time, loving the track Sometimes, feeling it was one of the best things I'd ever heard, & then learned who the artist was & felt I should dislike it, as I had a pre-formed idea about that type of band & their fans. Quickly realised it was nonsense, & have now seen them 11 times (& got tickets again for next year) & own almost ebverything they've ever released.
I have over 5000 cd's. I have almost 300 bits of lovely special vinyl. I'm a sucker for box sets.
Can't stand C&W though...
Sorry...now on phone so difficult to select.
I really like sometimes and she's a star, but hate sit down.
I'm not too much of a snob (-I acknowledge like some rubbish music), but I generally know what I like and can be set against firm against what I don't.0 -

My mum who is 70, watches the music on freesat. The kinks, and loads from the 50s to end of the 60s, seem to be on the channel that she often has on when I go in. I know she loves it and truth be told, that was a great age of music.
She knows them all. Last week patsy cline (crazy) came on and within a note or two she said. Doubt if you will know that one! To which i replied, Patsy Cline, crazy. She was impressed LOL0 -

I loved this as it was live and just cheered me up so much...

Then I tend to type; Verve, Killers, Muse, Manics - in no particular order.
So I'm quite 'guitar mainstream' in what I instinctively go far.
But like Zagubov's post said earlier, if I'm in someone else's house/car etc I find myself enjoying all sorts of other stuff too.
Just about keeping your ears & mind open for new music I guess (though easier said than done!) :AWe cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung
