I never heard of Hawkins until I came to MSE. Never saw one.

They have still got some shops: http://www.hawkin.com/
It was like a toyshop /novelty shop crossed with Willy Wonka's factory.:D If they still have stores I hoope they're as good as the old ones. It started as a mail order company.
It was based vaguely around SingleSue's end of the country IIRC.

That's an interesting link,, PN. I stand corrected . It still has about 20 stores but none in any major cities. well Cardiff, Edinburgh and Bristol are the only large(ish) ones with a store

I bought one of these from Hawkins as a xmas pressie some years back. Fascinating to watch.

I thought it could have done with being half as long though. I got a bit bored. The voiceover didn't help. As much as I like Caroline Aherne, she sounded like she needed a strong coffee or something.

    Agreed.

Northern twee voices like Jane Horrocks in the Tesco ads, eeks, really annoying.

Am I the nly person watching grand designs tonight? I am left totally cold by the project.....even though the building and location seemed exciting and held appeal, the result is..............bland.

Apparently it was sold to management, who kept 8 stores and closed the rest. I would think it's probably ok (based on no research whatsoever), but perhaps wise to steer clear of any gift vouchers ;)

Not so much the voice, more the tone. She sounded really bored, which didn't help keep my interest...

Zag, I thought of you this evening :)
Had a walk to the sorting office to pick up a parcel (glad I'm not living round there, almost was), and walked back down a tree-lined road you were once familiar with. Even in the dark, with the trees only semi-leaved (yes, I did just make that word up) it was really very pretty.

I also thought of you earlier today lir - was reading something that mentioned mucous membranes :D

(Don't get jealous everyone, I think of you lot too!)

    That's really handy. Thanks.

Just saw first TV xmas add (Pringles I think) :(

Can't say I got on with poundland/99p shop, too much is either tat or is actually more expensive than regular shops.

I got a shaver adaptor at homebase for the ridiculous price (2.99 or something, got a much cheaper one from wilkinsons and the cheap one only works if you jam the toohtbrush plug in at a weird angle and use a heavy book to wedge it there.
    I think....
