I think last three times I rented it was direct from the owner, no agent and no fees involved plus cheaper rent as no agents cut - got it from the newspaper small ads. I think the deposit was only about 2 weeks rent as well and the place whilst not designer was good basic and the very rare issues got sorted quickly. Renters are really ripped off these days.
    I think....

We rented four times - twice direct from the owners and twice through agents. Things were fine all four times. From what I've read on here, we happened to find landlords and agents that were much much better than some, and not out to rip us off. We never got stung with attempts to get us to pay a fee and sign a new contract, or anything like that - just moved onto rolling after 6 months. And we never had any trouble getting repairs and things done promptly either. I'm afraid it's all too long ago for me to have the faintest idea what the fees were when we moved in, though.

Edit: Actually, I suppose we rented five times. The first time was a flat in college married accommodation. The rent was staggeringly cheap - we were there for two years, summer 1991 to summer 1993. I remember after the first year getting a very apologetic letter from them saying that rising costs meant they were going to have to put the rent up, from £118pcm to £122pcm. A single room in a shared house in central Oxford was about £40-£45pw at the time, and we had a 1 bedroom flat with living room, kitchen and bathroom. The service was excellent too. The college estates bursary really seemed to think that the purpose of the accommodation was to provide somewhere for married graduate students to live, rather than to make money for the college - very odd, but rather nice.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The trouble is, when you want a roof over your head, you're constrained by what's availeble "today" quite often. No time to research, discover private LLs, etc..... and as I am really at the "cheap as chips" end of the market my choices are further constrained. CAC here isn't cheap to me ... but to a couple it's half price each, so I have to do what I can .... bearing in mind that I might end up with nowt :)

Ha! I can understand wanting to check I have enough money to pay the rent, but I just can't get my head around just how steep ths fees are. Cast an eye per the past few months bank statements, print out the same old contract (adding in the correct address if its a good day). Bingo! Not that'll be the best part of £350.

What do you have planned for your last weekend of freedom Nikkster?

Tomorrow is a lie in, packing, perhaps cleaning.

Sunday is loading up.the car, driving to new place, unloading, test drive to and from work, finding supermarket and getting essentials, unpacking, trying to not stress out too much.

In reality tomorrows activities will probably be delayed until Sunday, with some added flapping around in a panic :)

Oh, and somewhere along the way I need to finish taking up a pair of trousers I have been wearing for rather a long time just rolling up the bottoms... I think I have to start trying to look.a bit more presentable!

I'm not sure whether this is the end or the resuming of freedom... Bit of both I think :)

Don't forgets us nikkster, but life will probably be a bit rushed at times now.

Brrrr.......its for to the time of year again. I just washed my face with water so cold it made my teeth ache. ( no hot water connected to sink ATM) Dh carried dog dog upstairs and hilariously she is asking to go down again where it's warmer. (for various reasons she is better with us tonight but tomorrow she can start sleeping with big dog again I hope) . Sitting on the side of the bed made me go 'ooooooh' at the coldness ( wish I could find that silly electric blanket).

We are debating options. Two nights with no sleep dh says w should sleep in tomorrow ' for my sake', but I think we should get up as normal. The compromise is a shorter sleep in. ( I am thinking of cl ock change issues)

Architect has checked over all the measurements causing nice builder and I concern this week and he is confident that the issue causing stress should work......and coming up with options for if it doesn't.

Have a good time Niks. We have now caught up with three weeks of Strictly so that we can watch the live shows tomorrow, so will be watching at the same time as you. Don't know either of the other two.

Seriously, I hope you have a good weekend and that everything goes really well on Monday, then builds from how it has started.
