Evening all, hope you don't mind another male joining the chat.

I'm 29 and been single for a while. Felt like I was the only one in this kind of situation (I know how silly that sounds) so it's nice to know there are a lot of people out there willing to give each other support :)

I got myself into roughly £26k of debt  as a result of gambling and depression following a very rough period. Lost my mum and gf in a short time :(
Feel like I've moved on a great deal the last few years but still have my down days. Such as today, which is why I'm posting this.Even just typing this makes me feel better so thanks to Loopy for starting this thread.

I realise I'm probably rambling now so I'll cut this short. Hope we can all meet our goals and carry on supporting each other. Btw this is me 'popping my posting cherry'. Feels a it strange lol but it's about time I stopped lurking ha

Welcome to the thread Ronny. Your circumstances are very similar to mine, same age, similar problems and similar debt. Even though I wish you weren't in the same situation it feels good to have someone in the same boat. We could help each other out when times get tough. Have you stopped gambling?

Thanks for the warm welcome. Although i'd prefer none of us to be in this situation, it's somewhat reassuring to know that we're not alone and even better there's a group of people willing to push each other on. That's exactly what I need. I've been paying off these debts since the 1st Jan and I'm getting very bored with life at the moment

I'm currently down to £18k and hope to get my second overdraft paid off by christmas so I may join the challenge you suggested.

Muhren, good to hear from you. I haven't stopped gambling all together. No more big bets like old times but I occasional have a £10 acca at the weekend. I know I probably shouldn't but it's my 'entertainment' at the weekend. I don't smoke and I rarely drink so I see it as my only 'vice'.

I'll probably share my story about how I got into all this one day if anybody would actually be interested? lol

I've read a lot of other people's stories and it fascinates/inspires me to hear how people have been through the worst and come out stronger on the 'other side'. Just hope that's me one day. Can't wait for the day I don't feel like each day is a slog just to get debt free :(

I know how you feel. My debt free date should be the end of February, and i cant WAIT. I feel like ive had to make a lot of sacrifices to pay the debt off....im not sure il know what to do with an actual diposable income?! (its going to be a massive shock, as while ive been paying off the debt, ive ALSO had a pay rise....so all of a sudden, not only will i not be paying £150 odd in interest etc, but ALSO a decent amount in addition as a result of the payrise!)

Youll get there, keep going - imagine how good its going tofee to be debt free!

And I really enjoy hearing the stories on here too, I find them really motivational - I LOVE the DFW roll of honour!! :T

I can only imagine at the moment how good it will feel. Well done on all your hard work to this point :T My debt free date is in 32 months according to the snowball calculator. Feels like forever away, but just got to stay positive. I've come this far...

I'n a strange way I'm glad I had all this debt because it's taught me a lot of lessons that I wouldn't have otherwise have realised. Once I'm debt free my life will be unrecognisable to today! If you haven't already, I'd suggest you read a book called 'your money or your life' opened my eyes to a lot of money related issues and has paid for itself many times over imo.

I know that feeling all too well. Sometimes I think the same but we've just got to remember that nothing is permanent. I keep telling myself that all this is happening for a reason and it's making me a better person for whatever/whoever is around the corner!

I'm not religious but I believe that there's a bigger picture to everything ;)

Southerbelle and Ronny - I know how you feel and feel it too!

I decided to take a more pro active approach (will probably all come crashing down round my ears but hey, may make a funny story to tell!) and been a bit more active on the dating website to the point where I now potentially have 4 (yes 4) dates lined up for when I am in London next week!

I was put off after past experiences and particularly after a date in August when I had been emailing a guy for weeks and talking on the phone to him and travelled a long way to meet him (to be fair, he travelled just as far) and despite a fantastic weekend and his saying he thought I was a lot of fun and he wanted to see me again he then changed his mind and said his head was a mess (real meaning - "he's just not that into me"!)

So, feeling a bit more positive today even though I'm feeling fatter than ever due to stuffing face with cookies and milky bar all weekend!

Chin up everyone - we'll get there in the end. Maybe, when we can afford it (or we could save for it so something to look forward to) we could have a SAD drinks/dinner evening?! Would be pretty mad but very funny! Only condition would be that we would all have to write down on bits of paper (to be put in sealed envelopes) what we think each other looks like - would be a bit like the game "guess who"? ha ha! x

Haha that actually sounds like a great idea. I used to work in a call centre and I used to imagine what everyone looked like from the sound of their voice. I'm terrible at getting it right though. Nobody ever looks the way they sound!

Oh and good luck with your dates ;) I've had a couple but decided I really can't be bothered with it until I'm in a much happier and financially secure place!
