Hi guys i work within the energy market within the sales side of it and i would say im pretty well informed on the majortiy of tarrifs and products that all the companies have to offer but also i am a consumer. In reading a lot of your posts i can see a lot of people very much going for the sheep factor and just switching because Mr Lewis has told you to. There are a few things i would study first befor jumping into any rash desicions. First of all check the unit rates of the tarrif your on with your existing supplier. It may be your on an old capped price and are already getting a better deal than that of today's on offer. Once you switch you can not get this back. Also Mr Lewis writes that neither Scottish Power or Edf have not had a price decrease yet. But what you have to bare in mind is that Scottish Power were the cheapest utility company in the market previous to any decreases. Also they have reduced their Gas prices on 2 seperate products (Online energy saver 3 & the capped price version K) and i do know the info from the majority of broker sites suggests that this online product they have is only around £10 a year more expensive than BG click energy 2 (also if you want a paper copy of your bill on Click energy 2 then you must pay£5, so two paper bills a year would equal that out). Also for those of you who can't manage your accounts online their capped offwer is cheaper than any other standard MDD prices on the market. For Mr Lewis to say this is not competitve, i do believe is bad information. Also EDF Had a very good deal last summer when the sponsorship with the world cup was on, this also was an offer that was capped. Any customers on this tarrif should not leave it until the cap expires and no ocurrent offer in the market can match this. Other things that the consumer should bare in mind when switching is customer service. U switch the main broker site for the industry compiled a survey over 7 categories including customer service, meter reads and call waiting times, billing etc. In all 7 categories BG came last with N Power joining them on a couple. Of the 7 categories Scottish & Southern Energy came first in 4 of them and second in the other 3. with scottish Power coming first in 3 and second in the remaining 4.
The point im trying to make is every houshold is different and each has unique needs, check what your needs are before you switch and be sure to find a company that meets your needs, dont just follow the pack.
Happy switching0 -
I moved to Scottish Power in December from BG. I think its Online energy 2 or something like that.
I to have been eagerly awaiting a price reduction from Scottish Power. As Martin has suggested now is the time to switch I did a quick check on who was the cheapest. Atlantic were £11 cheaper and BG £8 cheaper. However for the sake of £8 and a terrible customer service and online billing system I think I'll stay where I am. All I need is a 2% price reduction and Scottish Power are the cheapest again0 -
The online energy save 3 has replaced the online energy saver 2, and its twice as big a saving. You can move to this package by going onto the SP website and selecting change my product and choosing oline energy saver. hope that helps you0

Not for everyone, it would have cost me more to move from Saver 2 - Saver 3 I suppose it all depends on which region you live in and the amount of Gas that you use.0 -
Hi, I am a low-medium user of gas-electricity from scottish power - online capped price gas and electricity till 01/05/07. I was initially set up to pay £37.50 DD per month but after 1 year, they have done some calculations and brought it down to £33 per month now (including the credit in their assumption)..
Since I had an online account, I never had any paper bills and now the trouble I am facing using comparison sites is that I do not know my annual Kwh consumption of gas and electricity. I also do not know what should be my correct annual spend from 01/05/07 as my contract is ending on 20/04/07 and and therefore tariffs automatically changing.
SP's tariff is infact going up from 01/05/07 (even considering online saver 3 for me) but they have brought my direct debit down to £33.
Can someone help me do a comparison. I live in scottish power supply area 10(post code SS14 2PU).
Thanks in advance.0 -

You should be able to look at your bills for the last 12 months on line and workout your annual usage from there. Hope that helps0 -
Psarin - The reason that your price is going up is not that Scottish Power are having a price increase on the 1st of May. Its because your are on a capped price that ends on the 1st of May. the package you are on was taken out over two years ago and is a two year old price. As you are probably aware in the last two years prices have somewhat jumped considerably and now that your cap is ending you must pay today's rates. That is why your prices are going up. It shows how good a deal you were on before really.
SuiDreams - I can assure you the Online energy saver 3 is more beneficial for you. yes the discount is only £15.75 and its £63 on the Saver 2. But the unit prices for Gas on the Saver 3 are far cheaper than the previous offer. Its on average about £70 a year cheaper than the saver 2.0 -
In Reply to JustAL's initial post 12.38pm today (too long to quote)
I'm sure Martin's traffic light system is purely meant as a guide only, i think your right that some people take that to seriously but going off past history martin seems to monitor the balance between in the amount of increases or decreases of suppliers. In the main this is good all be it general advice. I'm sure a lot of people switched last year when their supplier increases prices only to find their new supply did the same by the time they had switched. The same i'm sure will apply for example a customer leaving scottish and southern/npower/powergen for british gas because they reduced prices first only find their existing supplier reduce prices below British Gas (click 2 exceptions excluded) Strongly agree with your last paragraph though and most of the other information you gave0
