    Hi Tim

I'm after a new bed as my back is in agony most days I wake up. I have around 1k to spend can you recommend a good mattress? Also, I'm not sure where to buy it from as I've heard Dreams are a bunch of con artists.

    Cheers

I can't actually recommend anything on MSE, but I can point you in the right direction. First I would have to ask a few questions:
    1. What size bed are you after?
    2. Do you want a complete divan bed, or just the mattress?
    3. If it is just the mattress, then what type of bed is it going on?
    4. How firm do you like your bed?
    5. Have you tried anything yet?

We bought our bed in Warren Evans, its called the Sunday bed and we chose their own memory foam mattress. Every night I say how much i love my bed, it was the best grand we ever spent. If you live near their stores they are well worth a visit.

    Hi Tim

    I've sent you a message.

The bed I'm after is a Kingsize. I need a complete bed. Not sure on the firmness my current bed is fairly hard but I don't think that's causing the problem I think it's just poor quality. No I haven't tried anything yet.

    Cheers

I had seen someone mention it on here ,

    Why is pocket sprung better
compared to cage sprung or reflex foam ?

I don't know if you can remember, but there used to be an advert on TV where they places a glass of wine on a spring, then pushed down on the one next to it, and the wine didn't spill. Well that is what pocket springs are. Each spring works independently from each other, so they contour to your body and provide support where it is needed.

Reflex foam is just upholstery foam (sponge). If you push down in one place with reflex foam, then the area around it will slope towards your hand. So it doesn't contour to your body as well as pocket springs. Also reflex foam insulates rather than allowing air to flow through a mattress. So they can be very hot.

Open coil springs (cage springs) will behave in a similar way to reflex foam when pressure is applied. However it will still allow air to flow through.

I've just been looking at the Ergoflex site, and they use 9cm of memory foam. This is far too deep, and could also make you feel hotter as you sink deeper into it. The optimum depth is 2".

I have reviewed the ergoflex mattress in detail and have not at any point found it too hot at all. I don't think it's too deep either - it's rather comfortable actually.

I forgot to say that I also own an ergoflex mattress now :) If anyone wants to know any more feel free to ask me!

Obviously they must be suitable for some people, otherwise they wouldn't sell. Their main selling point is that they are similar in construction to Tempur, yet Tempur came out bottom in the which magazine report. Also they are probably good for people who like to be hot in bed.

The fact is that it is recognised that the optimum density should be between 60 and 70kg per m3, and the depth of the memory foam should be 2" to 2.5".
  • Hi Tim

Just wanted to let you know I have had my Sleepmaster mattress inspected and it has been agreed that it is faulty!!!! Yiphee. They are trying to get me to have another mattress from them, but only wish to make that mistake once.

Going to be looking for a nice new mattress now to fit my 6ft bedstead - NO MEMORY FOAM THO, can you recommend the type of mattress I need, that provides constant support and lasts more than 1 year?

    thanks
