but I am confused. I've narrowed it down to the following (quality and price balance - no more than £400) Anyone got any opinions on the following?
1. Memflex/bedworld - Pocket Memory Foam 1000 Mattress
http://www.bedworld.net/beds_mattresses/MF09POC1000MAT--/Memflexbedworld_Pocket_Memory_Foam_1000_Mattress.html
2. Myers 5ft King size Sculpture Memory Foam Mattress

3. Coolmax Pocket Sprung 5ft Memory Foam Mattress

4. FLEXCELL KING SIZE POCKET 1000 MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS

5. Calypso MEMORY FOAM & 1000 POCKET SPRUNG King Size Mattress
6. Sensaform Luxury - Medium Mattress

Please no salesman talk - I just want to know which is the best quality for the price. I definitely want a king size memory foam and pocket sprung and preferably a 'no turn' mattress. I would like it to be medium to firm as I have back problems.
Thanks in advance for any help with a decision.

I actually sell number 5, but I'll try not to sound like a salesman, and to give you 100% honest advice:
We recently sold an Eros and a Calypso mattress to an osteopath. So we asked their professional opinion on the best type of mattress for back support. They told us that most of their profession recommends a combination of pocket sprung and memory foam. They also went on to say that if you can't afford pocket sprung with memory foam, then the next best option is just pocket sprung, and that they are far superior to latex (or reflex) foam and memory foam mattresses that seem to be the most common memory foam mattresses on the market.
Number 4 either isn't pocket sprung, or isn't the mattress in the picture. Take a look at the photo, you can't roll a pocket sprung and memory foam mattress up without damaging it. I have also noticed this seller make false claims about their mattresses in the past.
You say that you want a non-turn mattress. Well I should point out that all mattresses should be turned on a regular basis in order to prevent uneven wear. This especially applies to pocket sprung mattresses. When a manufacturer makes a non-turn mattress they often advertise it as a feature, and say that the mattress has been made in a special way so that it doesn't have to be turned. The truth is that all they are doing by making a mattress non-turn is:
1) making it cheaper to manufacture because the memory foam is the most expensive part of the mattress.
2) making a mattress that won't last as long because you can't turn it over as well as around lengthways.
Some of the mattresses have a coolmax layer. If you like to be really cool in bed, then one of these would be most suitable. However there are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:
1) some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.
2)mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.
Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.
As I said at the start, I actually sell the Calypso, but i'm not going to say you should buy it until you have had a few more replies about the other mattresses.0 -
Hi - We brought no2 the Myers Sculpture about 3months ago and can highly recommend it - brought it from the same company as your ebay link - but we brought it direct from them and they discounted a tenner off the price (contact number is in the about me part on their ebay page) - Next Day Delivery too - Looks as though they have dropped their price too as we paid £4200

They do smell a bit but it goes with time. A friend of mine bought two single ones from dreams recently and says they are good quality and would recommend them.
We got ours some years back unfortunately i cant recall where but they are excellent, i would not have another sprung mattress again. The bonus to me is that they are hypo allergenic so no beasties living in them.
There are lots of sellers of ebay, quality will vary, get the highest foam density you can with the thickest visco elastic top layer you can. 3" would be best but 2" would be ok, dont get one with a 1" visco elastic upper layer.0 -
We have a Sealy Mirrorform. Very nice and very pleased with it...0

I'm going to try and answer all the questions raised in this thread in one go. I do sell beds and mattresses, but I will be 100% honest:
First of all you say you are looking for a foam only mattress. Well as far as memory foam mattresses go, they aren't the best type. We recently sold an Eros and a Calypso mattress (both pocket sprung with memory foam on both sides) to an osteopath.
I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:
1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.
3) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the righ choice because it will cost them if you return it).
4) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
5) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.
The density of the memory foam is down to personal preference. Higher density foam does give more support, but is too firm for some people. Try and stay between 50 & 67 kg per m3.
The optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Any less and it wouldn't be deep enough to contour to your body. Any more and you will sink into it and get far too hot.
Some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.
Mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.
As for the smell, it is caused by the fire retardent chemicals used in the foam. Sometimes the foam is used before the chemicals are 100% dry, and this is what causes the smell. The smell will go eventually in a well aired room. This problem is mainly associated with foam only mattresses, as mattresses with a combination of springs and foam allow air to circulate better.
As for the mattresses with a summer and winter side, I'm not 100% sure, but you will probably find that the summer side is latex foam, and not memory foam. The Eros and Calypso are the only mattresses that I know about with memory foam on both sides.0 -
Tempur make the proper ones. I took the cheper option and went for 2 Tempur Traditional pillows - they are great. Used them for a couple of years now. They keep your head in position more than a nomal pillow so you don't move around as much at night, and also reduces snoring because your head is in a good position. It gives lots of support to your neck and so helps your posture. Cheaper than buying a new bed. I sleep much better now, so although they seem expensive in comparison to a normal pillow they are well worth it for a better nights sleep and they last for years.
Got my Tempur Tradional Pillows from Bakers and Larners who have the best price, £5.99 delivery, and arrived less than 24 hours later. They sell Tempur beds too and special sheets for memory beds:
