Toppers should never be used to revive an old mattress. You won't benefit from a memory foam topper if your mattress is worn out.

Memory Foam Mattresses undergo a great deal of development to ensure that all the components of the mattress are a perfect match. However toppers are a cheaper alternative for those on a low budget.

Tempur are very over priced. There are loads of other memory foam manufacturers out there who make memory foam as good (if not better) as Tempur . Remember Tempur came out bottom in the which magazine trial. Two other very good manufacturers that I know of are Kaymed and Vitafoam. They supply many mattress manufacturers. So ask the seller what make of memory foam is used in the mattresses.

Just because a mattress is much cheaper than Tempur, it doesn't mean that they aren't better. It's just that they aren't as over priced as Tempur.

    Hi Tim,

I have read your posts withy interest on memory foam mattresses. We bought one for my son from Dreams as previously mentioned by another person, £199 double rolled up on collection, but not shown on their website as only available in the stores.

Having tried this mattress, it greatly helps my back problems at night and has sparked interest in buying one for me & my wife. Our bed is king size & Dreams don't do that type in that size.

Having looked around I have found the following:-

    http://memory-foam-warehouse.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=mfw038

But you mention that pocket springs & memory foam is a better combination. We like a soft to medium mattress and wondered what you would recommend & also what you think of the product I have shown from Memory Foam Warehouse.

In addition we would like memory foam pillows & I would be interested in your views & recommendation.

    Thanks

Yes the pocket sprung/memory foam option is by far a better mattress for quite a few reasons including these 2 very:

    1) the air can circulate in the sprung area to help dissapate the heat, and to help stop you over heating.

    2) I have been told personally by an osteopath that the best type of mattress for back support is pocket sprung/memory foam. She said that if you can't afford pocket sprung/memory foam, then you should go for pocket sprung only rather than latex foam/memory foam. And that's from someone who told me that they used to work for Tempur.

If you find a soft memory foam mattress then it won't work as memory foam is supposed to. Memory foam has to be high density in order to give you the support it is designed to do. The softest memory foam mattress that will give you enough support would be a medium.

The mattress shown in the link from the memory foam warehouse isn't a very well designed mattress. To start with it has 10cm (4") of memory foam which is too deep. Some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot. Also the mattress has latex foam instead of a spring layer. Mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.

The mattress shown is also a one sided mattress. Well I should point out that all mattresses should be turned on a regular basis in order to prevent uneven wear. This especially applies to pocket sprung mattresses. When a manufacturer makes a non-turn mattress they often advertise it as a feature, and say that the mattress has been made in a special way so that it doesn't have to be turned. The truth is that all they are doing by making a mattress non-turn is:
    1) making it cheaper to manufacture because the memory foam is the most expensive part of the mattress.

    2) making a mattress that won't last as long because you can't turn it over as well as around lengthways.

If you need any more advice, then you are welcome to PM me.

Thanks for that Tim. What pocket spring/memory foam mattress would you recommend then?

Also what do you think of memory foam pillows and which are the best ones to buy?

There is a huge variety of memory foam pillows available. Many of them are very poor quality (as are many of the reflex foam/memory foam mattresses) as many people are jumping onto the memory foam band wagon. I've never actually tried a moulded pillow, but I'm told by the factory that the memory fill pillows are the most comfortable.

I shouldn't think that any pillows that are given away free would be much good.

If you want to try the moulded pillows out for a very price, then I've seen them in Rosebys for £10. They are very small, and don't feel like high density memory foam, but it might give you an idea what they are like.

The Venice mattress (made by La Romantica Beds) is the only medium pocket sprung/memory foam mattress that I know of that has memory foam on both sides.

Have been reading this thread with interest as we are about to revamp our bedroom and want to treat ourselves to a new bed.

Tim Deegan - I have seen the Apollo Calypso on ebay and like the sound of it. But, do I go for a firm one or a softer one (not the extra soft one that costs more)? We have had an orthopedic mattress for several years which is hard and frankly, bloody uncomfortable. My husband says it actually gives him backache .

We're therefore tempted to go for a softer option next time, but then again I'm worried that it might be so much softer than the current mattress that it might be a shock to the system and I won't like it. Any advice?

Are there any similar density mattresses available somewhere like Dreams so I can go and test them to get an idea of the difference between the 2? I tried lying on a couple of pocket memory mattresses at the weekend in MFI and one was much too saggy feeling, but the other more firm one felt divine!

The springs in the Calypso and Madrid are rated as medium to firm. However because the springs have a layer of memory foam on top, then your weight is spread out meaning that even with the softer of the 2 memory foams it will still give just a slightly softer than firm feel.

The 2 choices of memory foam are 55kg/m3 and 67kg/m3. Both of these are high density, but one is just higher than the other (low density memory foam simly doesn't give you the support that memory foam is supposed to).

The Eros isn't super soft. With the softer foam option it gives a medium feel, and with the firm foam it is slightly firmer.

My best advice is to phone the seller and ask advice.
