Members of my fmily have also purchased these matresses and they have no complaint either so I suppose its down to personnal choice.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the latex foam/memory foam mattresses, and you did indeed get a bargain for a double. However you were given the wrong advice as far as pocket sprung/memory foam goes. They are in fact far superior to the reflex/memory foam type. this is usually reflected in the price.
It wasn't someone at dreams who advised you against pocket sprung was it??0 -
yes it was the sales man from dreams0

That doesn't surprise me at all. Sales reps from some of the big chains are well known for giving duff information. I think they must either be badly trained, or they try to sell goods that earn them the most commision.
Latex/memory foam mattresses are cheaper to manufacture that pocket sprung/memory foam. Therefore some stores may put a bigger mark up on the prices.
There are quite a gew sales gimmicks in the bed industry. Here are a few:
1) Pillow Top Mattresses - pillow top mattresses can be very comfortable when new. However over time the fillings can move about and become lumpy. The speed in which this happens can depend on the fillings. Pillow top mattresses are also non turn (see 2).
2) Non turn mattresses - many manufacturers advertise non turn as being a feature. They imply that the mattresses have been made in a special way so that they last well without being turned. The truth is that all they have done is made the mattress cheaper to manufacture because it only has quilting on one side. Also all mattresses need to be turned on a regular basis in order to make sure that the wear evenly. This is obviously better if you can turn them both lengthways and over. So a non turn mattress will wear out quicker.
3) The more Pocket Springs the Better - more than 800 pocket springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. Some manufacturers use over 300 springs, but the proplem with very high numbers is that each individual spring has to be so small and weak, that they can be broken or damaged easier.
4) The more memory foam the better - some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot. Mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.0 -
Hello Tim.
I recently came across some memory foam mattresses by Body Impressions/Sleep Secrets which are quite competitively priced. Can you shed some light on this manufacturer? Their products are not widely stocked and seem to be available mainly on the internet. Are they any good? Will appreciate your comments.
Makro currently have these mattresses and toppers instore on special. I am not sure of all the prices but I bought a super king size topper from them for £72 + VAT, I think the king size one was £55 + VAT and the double £45 + VAT. Also the super king size full mattress was £289 + Vat. I have only slept on it for a week but so far I like it - a lot !!
Now I am a big guy and my only fear with this cheaper one is that it will lose its memory effect quickly as we bought two cheap memory foam pillows from ebay and after a few weeks they were rubbish. I invested in two tempur pillows about 4 months ago and although it takes a bit of getting used too I am loving that too, all in all the combination of the topper and pillow works really well. There is a 3 year guarantee with the mattress topper and well if it lasts 3 years at that price I will be well chuffed. Incidentally I have the topper on top of a foam mattres and it works well for me and my wife.

We just bought foam mattress but one that is pocket sprung and it is the best thing we have bought for years - we got it from the sleep depot in chester and it was £415 reduced from £600 plus we got free delivery of £20.
My husband broke his back many years ago in a tank in the army and i suffer from fibromyalgia and spend more than 14 hours a day in bed and it is so comfortable for both our conditions..... I would certainly recommed it...
Visco Pro Supreme = Memory Foam Pocket Sprung mattress = it has quite a lot of springs but cant remember the amount.....sorry
Hope this helps

Hi - We brought no2 the Myers Sculpture about 3months ago and can highly recommend it - brought it from the same company as your ebay link - but we brought it direct from them and they discounted a tenner off the price (contact number is in the about me part on their ebay page) - Next Day Delivery too - Looks as though they have dropped their price too as we paid £420
Ouch!!! they saw you coming. The Calypso is pocket sprung with memory foam on both sides, and only costs £3990 -
Sorry to hijack but Tim Deegan, what kind of mattress is soft and squishy? I really hate my bed, it's way too hard and I love a nice squishy bed I can sink into and snuggle up in. I don't have the money atm but want to know what to look for when I do later this year and what's a fair price if you're able to tell me please.0

Soft open coil sprung mattresses aren't very good for your back as they will tend to curve your spine.
Also memory foam mattresses won't suite you if you like a very soft mattress.
So you would be best with a pocket sprung mattress like the Milan made by La Romantica Beds.0 -

Thanks for the feedback. It was in Makro that I first noticed that brand and the prices seem quite competitive. They seem to keep offering these memory foam mattresses and the Silentnight ones on Makro Mail on a regular basis, so they must be in demand. Was just trying to research the brand a bit more before deciding. Good to know that you are happy with the one you bought. Maybe I ought to go for the topper as well instead of the whole mattress.0
